About University

Post Graduate Institute of Medical, Education & Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh is an Institute of National Importance which offers undergraduate and postgraduate medical training in various fields. In addition to it, PGIMER also offers super speciality courses viz. DM/ M.Ch and research programme (Ph.D) in selected disciplines. PGI Chandigarh is also a working hospital which provides quality medical care to a large number of patients on a daily basis.

Admission to all the programmes offered by PGIMER is done twice a year (except B.Sc and M.Sc Nursing) with academic sessions commencing from January/ July. Candidates are shortlisted for admission on the basis of marks secured in the All-India entrance examination, conducted by PGIMER. The minimum marks required for the selection is 55% for general candidates including foreign applicants. Relaxation of 5% is given to the candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes / Scheduled Tribes / OBC & PWD category.

PGIMER Admissions

Registration process for admission begins from the month of September/ October and the PGIMER entrance exam is conducted in November/ December every year. Candidates who clear the PGIMER entrance test are intimated for counseling process to complete the admission process.

*Admission to B.Sc Nursing and M.Sc Nursing programme is made once a year with the academic session commencing from the month of September.

Candidates can apply for the courses by filling the application forms online through the PGIMER website ( and submitting the processing fee of Rs. 1000/- (Rs. 800 for SC/ ST candidates) through the generated Challan in any State Bank of India branch.

All candidates are required to deposit the above fees in any State Bank of India branch by filling the challan form in the name of Director, PGIMER, Chandigarh (Examination) in the Power Jyoti Account No. 32211613319 and those candidates who have SBI account can also pay their fee through i-collect service of the bank.


PGIMER conducts entrance examination for admission to all its courses (B.Sc., M.Sc., MD/MS, DM/ M.Ch., Ph.D). Here are some quick facts about the PGIMER entrance exam:

For B.Sc Nursing: Admission to UG programmes is made once a year and applications are generally invited in June/ July every year. The entrance test is conducted in Chandigarh in the month of August. 

Admit card for eligible candidates appearing for the test is made available for download on the university website 15 days in advance. The test will consist of 100 objective type questions with negative marking of ¼ for each wrong answer.

For M.Sc Nursing: The entrance exam is usually held in the month of July every year at Chandigarh. Candidates can download the admit cards from the institute website by logging in with their respective login ID and password.

The entrance test is conducted in English and consists of 100 MCQs with negative marking of ¼ for every wrong answer.

For PG and PhD courses: PGIMER entrance test for admission to various postgraduate and doctoral programmes will be conducted in the month of November/ December across multiple centres in Chandigarh.  The following table contains examination dates for different courses offered by PGIMER:

PGIMER Results & Counseling

Results for all the entrance examinations conducted by PGIMER Chandigarh for different programmes is declared within few days of the test. Candidates who pass the written entrance exam are required to appear for Interview/ Counseling process.

Candidates will be invited for interview strictly in order of merit on the basis of marks obtained by them in the PGIMER entrance examination. The number of candidates to be called for the interview will be three times the total number of seats to be filled in each category from candidates who fulfill the cut off points.

ICMR JRF (organized by PGIMER)

Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in collaboration with PGIMER Chandigarh conducts a National level examination for the award of Junior Research Fellowships to deserving candidates. The test is usually conducted once a year on the 2nd/ 3rd Sunday of July in 12 centres across India.  

ICMR JRF Examination is a crucial step in the process of admission to the Ph.D/ Research Programme. Candidates who pass the ICMR-JRF exam would be permitted to enroll themselves for the Ph.D course of any UGC/MCI recognized university. The validity of fellowship awarded to a candidate will be six months.

ICMR-JRF Exam Details:

The test will be of 120 minutes duration and will consist of following two sections:

  1. The Aptitude Section (Section A) – 50 questions
  2. The Specific Section (Section B, C) – 100 questions per section

One mark will be awarded for each of the correct answer and a negative marking of 0.25 will be made for every wrong response.

Eligibility, Selection Criteria and Application Process:

Candidate must possess M.Sc./M.A. or equivalent degree with minimum 55% marks (50% for SC/ST and physically handicapped candidates).

The qualifying marks will be 55% obtained in both the sections (A+B or C) for General and OBC candidates and 50% for SC/ST and physically handicapped.

About the Institute

Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences & Research was started in 1962 and owes its inception to the vision of late Sardar Partap Singh Kairon, the then Chief Minister of Punjab and the distinguished medical educationists. The Institute became an autonomous body under the Act of Parliament in 1967 functioning under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

  • It was established as a center of excellence which would endeavor to develop patterns of teaching in postgraduate medical education in as many branches as possible and attempt to produce specialists in several disciplines of medicine
  • The Institute was declared as an Institute of National importance by an Act of Parliament (Act51 of 1966) with effect from April 01
  • It intakes 610 students for MD/MS, 18 students for MDS, 5 students for MHA and 257 students for B. Sc. (Paramedical)
  • The institute has been recognized by the National AIDS Control Organization as a centre of excellence in HIV care (COE) and has a voluntary testing and counseling centre (VCTC) on the fourth floor of research A block. PGIMER is involved in research for the rural and community related environment and health problems. There are two research blocks called Research Blocks A & B which house various basic science departments. Every year nearly 400 research articles are published for the institute in national and international journals.


  • Cultural Activities: College celebrates week long cultural bonanza Spring Fest
  • Literary Activity: Students bring out the annual magazine, which provide them an opportunity to demonstrate their literary ideas and writing skills


  • The infrastructure for patient care includes the Nehru Hospital

Advanced Pediatrics Centre:

  • It has several specialties for the care of children such as Allergy Immunology, Hematology and Oncology, Pediatric Neurology and many others
  • It has Neonatal Intensive Care Unit that provides life support to 1000 babies & artificial ventilation to about 200 babies every year
  • There is a separate 24 hrs emergency service for children
  • This centre also houses surgical specialties for children such as Pediatric Surgery and Pediatric Orthopedics

Advanced Eye Centre:

  • The centre runs several special clinics and services viz. Lens, Cornea, Uvea, Glaucoma, Retina and Vitreous, Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, Contact Lens & Low Vision Aids, Oculoplastic and Tumor Clinics
  • For the first time in this country, laser treatment of retinal diseases and glaucoma was started here

Drug de-addiction centre:

  • It is operational in PGIMER to take care of patients addicted to substance abuse
  • It provides comprehensive care for prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of these patients
  • The centre has recreational and indoor sports facilities
