About University

Kannada University was established in the year 1991 by the Karnataka Government through the Kannada University Act, 1991 after long years of agitation and continuous demands

  • The University has three main wing including Adalitanga (Administrative wing), Adhyayananga (Academic wing) and Prasaranga (Publication wing)
  • The university has a splendid location in the Hampi area of Karnataka which holds a historical significance
  • It was located in the Stone mantapas of hampi from where it moved to its new campus “Vidyaranya” in 1994
  • The university also takes pride in having two more satellite campuses situated on Badami and Kuppalli
  • It has a unique feature in that it has named each block in its campus with historically meaningful names like “Vidyaranya” for the entire campus, “Akshara” for the library building, and “Kriyashakthi” for the administrative building and so on
  • The chief objective of   the university (KU) is to perform inter and multidisciplinary research on the diverse areas of Kannada and Karnataka
  • The University confers "Nadoja" awards, every year, to eminent personalities for their contribution in various fields
  • It is also probably India’s first and only university to have dedicated a major part of its campus for the department of tribal studies that focuses on the tribal issues and history and the university boasts of a Tribal Village even known as “Girisime”
  • The “Girisme” village has hut-like structures where the students are given the chance to literally feel the life and essence of the tribes of Karnataka
