About University

Jadavpur University (JU), Kolkata was established in 1955. The university is an educational and research institution in India. At present Jadavpur University is an internationally recognized premier university of the country and it has been accorded the highest grading and rated as a "Five Star University" in India by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). 

  • It is situated at Campus No.1, Raja S.C. Mallik Road Kolkata in the state of West Bengal.
  • The University has been recognized by the UGC.
  • It has also been approved by the AICTE.
  • The University has been accredited by the NAAC "A".
  • NCE afterward has been looking after the College of Engineering and Technology, Bengal.
  • The West Bengal Government and the Government of India decided to enact the required legislation to set up JU on December 24, 1955.

Jadavpur University Courses:

The university presently offers multiple modern day professional undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Arts, Engineering & Technology, and Science streams.

  • Eligibility Criteria:

Candidates must be completed his/her Bachelor’s Degree with maximum 50% marks (45% marks for reserved category candidates) or equivalent CGPA of any recognized university in India or abroad.

Jadavpur University Admission:

UG Admission

  • Admission to undergraduate programs in the FET is through the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination, conducted by an independent body, followed by counseling.
  • For admission to the undergraduate programs in the Faculty of Arts, a combination of merit (i.e. results at the +2 level) and entrance test is used. Departments have autonomy to decide upon admission criteria.
  • In the Faculty of Science, admission at the undergraduate level is based on merit.

PG Admission

  • In the FET, GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) results and scholarships become important for admission; in addition, students sponsored by industry as well as self-sponsored students are admitted. For GATE applicants, their GATE score is given a 70% weight age, while for the others their BE or B.Tech scores receive 50% weight age; the balance percentage is determined through tests, with 10% weight age being given to experience in the industry for students sponsored by industry.
  • In the Faculty of Science, admission to postgraduate programs is on the basis of merit (BSc results) with entrance test, conducted by individual departments.
  • In the Faculty of Arts, the BA (Hons.) results and admission tests conducted by individual departments determine admission.

Jadavpur University Placement:

The cell continuously coordinates with various industries and organizations for placement of the students. It has already successfully placed a percentage of students in Industry. It actively obtains feedback from organizations and conveys it to respective departments which, in turn, train students accordingly, thereby increasing their employability.

Research Collaborations:

The University earmarks Rs.15 lakhs of its own funds every year to support research activities by students. Twenty-two out of the university's thirty-six departments have been recognized by, and have been receiving funds from, national and international agencies, primarily because of their research output. The quantum of assistance received from external agencies during the year 2012-13 for research was nearly Rs.30 crores, not including funds received under TEQIP and the DST-PURSE schemes.

  • Dr. Anwesha Aditya, a Ph.D. scholar at the Department of Economics, winning the IEDRA Award 2013 of the EXIM Bank of India, for her Ph.D. thesis.
  • Bichitra Tagore Online Variorum completed and launched by President of India on 5 May.

Library:

 The University Central Library is housed in a three-storied building. It is shelf space and working space is 36,000 Sq. ft., approximately and is being extended by new construction of Annex Building 5,500 Sq. ft. (approx.).

  • Seven reading rooms, carrels & an alcove for bound volumes of journals provide sitting accommodation for 700 readers. There is a separate library on the second Campus at Salt Lake. The space of the Salt Lake Library is 6,500sq. ft.
  • The University is proud of its library system, which comprises the Central Library, Salt Lake Campus Library and 36 Departmental Libraries under the Faculty of Science, Arts, Engineering, and Technology. This is the third largest library in West Bengal.

 Collections:

  • The Central Library has over 6,46,296 volumes of books on record (including the Salt lake Campus Library and those loaned to Departmental Libraries), 80,700 bound volumes of journals, 13000 theses and dissertations, and 37,000 items of non-book materials such as reports pamphlets, maps, and microforms. 
  • At present, the library subscribes to about 633 print and 2794 online journals.
  • The University also has access to around 9082 online journals more through INFLIBNET and INDEST Consortia.
  • The University Library has access to around 12530 Journals.
  • The library subscribes to 30 databases which include Scopus, Econlit etc. & also about 10,057 E-books.
