About University

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) is a public engineering institute located in Mumbai in state of Maharashtra. It is the second oldest campus of the Indian Institute of Technology system. IIT Bombay is ranked globally among top universities of science & technology

  • It was established by an Act of Parliament in the year 1958. Planning got its wings in the year 1957 and the first batch of hundred students was given admission in 1958.
  • It has been approved by the AICTE and also recognized by the UGC. In the year 1961, the Institute was proclaimed as an institution which is having national importance.
  • IIT Bombay was set up with assistance from UNESCO and funds from the USSR Government. UNESCO provided equipment and technical experts mainly from the Soviet Union.
  • The UNESCO supplied with many fellowships (27 in number) so that the Indian faculty members could be given appropriate training in the USSR.

Facilities: There are various facilities that are provided in the Institute. They are as follows-

Residential Facilities 

There hostels at IITB have numbering system-

  1. Hostel No. 10 is for the under graduate and post graduate students.
  2. The hostel with No. 11 is only for the post graduate students and totally kept reserved for the girls.
  3. There is also a housing complex named Tansa House which is reserved for the ‘single male project staff’. Being the smallest hostel, it provides with 128 rooms.
  4. The Tulsi House has been kept reserved for the research scholars only.

Computer Facilities 

There are mini computers and various work stations. CAD activity is there in Metallurgical Engineering and Chemical Engineering.

Library 

The Library is very well equipped and has a rich collection of following particulars-

  1. More than 2, 35,300 books, thesis, videos and CDs.
  2. 11, 886 BC and TLL (Book Bank) collection.
  3. 1, 18,331 bound volumes of journals.
  4. 67, 512 pamphlets, standards and reports.
  5. Above 15000  online printed journals

Festivals:

  • Mood Indigo – It is the Annual cultural festival of IIT Bombay which is held in December. It is a four day event and the largest of its kind in Asia

University Hostel

Hostel For : Unisex ₹20 K

Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay campus is located at Powai and is known for its extensive residential facilities. There are 15 hostels are available at IITB campus for the students and each hostel are designated by number 1, 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13, 14. Each hostel has its own independent entity with its own mess facilities and recreational areas etc. The students can also choose to make their own arrangement for accommodation outside the campus.

Hostel 1 – The hostel one (H-1) is the first and oldest hostel of IITB which is managed by the students and is known as the ‘Queen of the Campus’. The rooms are mostly occupied for Postgraduates and Research scholars. It is also famous for its one minute walk like “One minute walk to Swimming pool”, “One minute walk to Gymkhana”, “One minute walk to soccer ground”, “One minute walk to open air theatre” and “One minute walk to students activity center (SAC)”. In H-1 the spacious lounge, huge mess with excellent workers and ever improving quality of mess food are offered by the Queen. It also carries well-equipped gym and good playgrounds for the students so that they can mould the body along with the mind.

Hostel 2- The H-2 is one of the most spirited hostels of IITB campus. It is basically engaged in sports activities and has taken the part in the intra hostel tournaments. It also comprises leagues for Cricket, Volleyball and Football etc. The sports equipments are well maintained and are regularly updated catering to needs of the hostilities.

Hostel 3 – It is the best-known hostel of IITB for its enthusiastic inmates. For H3 sports is not an activity and not a discipline. It offers various facilities like Lounge, T.V. Room, Washing, Cycle Pool, Computer Room, Music Room, Gym Room and Pool room etc.

Hostel 4 – It is one of the best-known hostel for its enjoyable environment. Students living here have enjoyed the stay from the past decades. The students residing in the hostel have enthusiastically participated in various cultural and technical fest hosted in the campus.

Hostel 5 – The hostel is providing most passionate, fearless, intense environment for all IITians. In facilities, it carries a well stocked canteen, a lounge where the students can read a magazine in one of the many bucket chairs, a compy room where they can watch the movies etc.

Hostel 6 – It is the most happening hostel of IITB which is known as the VI-Kings which got derived from the roman numeral VI. The hostel has a largest football field and one of the best basketball court among all the hostels in the institute. It is one of the largest and has a unique wing culture along with 22 wings. It has a lavish lounge which has a 65 TV and an extravagant sound system.

Hostel 7, 8 and 10- It offers a most vibrance environment to the students so that they can interact with others while participating in community activities which are organized by the students in IITB hostel 7 & 8.

Hostel 9 – H-9 has a fully equipped music room facility for students which carries equipment like Three Amplifiers, Two Guitars, A complete drum set, Two Synthesizers, A Congo, A Tabla Set etc. It also carries a small library of about 150 books and a DSLR.

Hostel 11 & 12- The hostel is well-equipped with the sports and gym facilities. It provides all the facilities which help in the over – all personality development of students in the field of Academics, Sports, Cultural, Administration and Nature.

Hostel 13 – It is one of the best hostel of IITB among the newly build hostels. The inmates are full of energy in every disciplines such as Sports, Technology and Cultural.

Hostel 14 – The hostel 14 is known as a Silicon Ship and provides messing for around 200 people. Many sports facilities are available for students and sports equipment are available for almost all major games.

Tansa House – It is a residential premises which are managed by the Industrial Research and Consultancy Center (IRCC) which governs all the R&D activities and sponsored projects in all the departments. Ten Thousand Teacher Training Project, Spoken Tutorials, Million Souls, FOSSEE, Virtual Laboratories, Chemical Technology etc. are some of the activities the hostel is involved in.
