JEE Main 2019 Exam Pattern

JEE Main includes two papers- Paper 1 and Paper 2. The exam format for both, paper 1 and paper 2 of JEE Main is announced by the organizing authorities.  

  • 3 hours are given to clear both the papers.
  • Aspirants can opt to give the examination in English, Hindi or any other preferable regional language.
  • There are 3 sections in paper 1 namely, Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
  • Paper-2 contains 3 parts as well; Aptitude Analysis, Mathematics, and Drawing with maximum marks being 390.
  • Negative marking is also eligible.
  • The maximum marks an aspirant can score is 360
  • Paper-2 is organized only in offline method.
  • Paper-1 is conducted for admission to different B.E/B.Tech courses whereas Paper-2 are for Architectural courses.
  • Aspirants wishing to take both can opt for both the paper. They can also choose the method of attempting paper-1 i.e. online as well as offline.
  • JEE Main 2019 will be organized in both Online as well as Offline mode.

JEE Main 2019 Exam Format in Detail

JEE Main 2019 will have 2 papers for the students of different streams. Paper 1 is for students aiming to get admission in only engineering courses and paper 2 is for the aspirants interested in Architecture and concerned courses.

Aspirants interested in both the subjects can opt for both paper 1 and 2.

Paper-1 Exam Format

  • Each part of the question paper has questions with equal weight and each part consist of 30 questions.
  • Paper one includes Objective type questions in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics and can be held in an online and offline method.
  • Aspirants get 3 hours to clear the paper.
  • 1/4th marks of the total marks will be deducted for every inaccurate response.
  • 4 marks are allotted for every accurate response.  Maximum marks that an aspirant can score are 360.

JEE Main 2019 Exam Format for Paper 1 Section-Wise

Here is the exam format for every subject separately:


Physics is an ancient and a very broad field of science which is vast and interesting. It is the study of matter and energy via scientific law.

 Although physics can be considered as a very tough subject it is one of the most important subjects and also an important part of JEE Main paper. The format of the paper is given below:

  • Each accurate marked response will be honored 4 marks.
  • There are a total of 30 questions in the Physics section.
  • ¼ marks are deducted for every inaccurate response.
  • Questions are of objective type MCQ based
  • The medium of responses in English or any other regional language opted by the aspirants.


Chemistry is also one of the important subjects to study for as it comprises the study of the properties of Matter. It can also be a tough task dealing with the subject.

 Here is the format for chemistry to have more clarity on it:

  • Questions are objective type.
  • Each correctly marked response will be honored 4 marks.
  • Chemistry section carries a total of 30 questions.
  • ¼ marks are deducted for every inaccurate response.
  • The medium of responses in English or any other regional language opted by the aspirants.


Mathematics is the study of structures, space, numbers, and change. Format for the subject is as follows-

  • Each accurate response will be honored 4 marks.
  • Total 30 objective type questions in the section.
  • Deduction of ¼ marks for every wrong response.

The medium of language is English or the regional language chosen by the aspirant.

JEE Main 2019 Exam Format for Paper 2

  • Aptitude test (Part 1) has 50 objective type questions. 4 marks are honored for every accurate response.
  • The question paper consists of 3 parts and is held in offline method only.
  • Maximum marks that an aspirant can score are 390. 1/4th marks of the response are deducted for every wrong response.
  • Aspirants get 3 hours to clear the question paper.
  • Part 3 includes 2 questions of 35 marks each which is a drawing test and is attempted on a separate drawing sheet.
  • Part 2, i.e., Mathematics consists of 30 Objective type questions and 4 marks are honored for every accurate response.

Marking Scheme for JEE Main 2019

JEE Main 2019 Marking Scheme for both the papers are given below:

Paper 1

  • 1/4th of the total marks of a question are deducted for every response attempted wrongly.
  • No marks will be deducted for questions left unattempted.
  • Filling up more than one choice will be termed inaccurate and marks will be deducted for the same.
  • Each part includes 30 questions and for every response, 4 marks are honored making every part worth 120 marks each

Paper 2

  • Part 3 consists of 2 questions with 35 marks each giving a total of 70 marks.
  • Part 2 of the paper includes 30 questions with 4 marks each making a total of 120 marks.
  • Part 1 consists of 50 questions 4 marks each making a total of 200 marks.
  • 1/4th of the wrong response will be deducted as negative marking for wrong responses.

JEE Main 2019 Important Instructions

Following are a few set of instructions given to an aspirant before going for their examinations. The instructions comprise:

For Offline Medium

  • Aspirants are supposed to access the examination center 30 minutes before the allotted time with their hall tickets.
  • Students should fill the circles cautiously to avoid confusion between the responses as the OMR sheets are corrected by OMR form reader software.
  • Aspirants should outline the circle of their desired response on their OMR sheet so as to avoid unnecessary spillage of ink outside the response sheet.
  • Do not make any stray marks on the OMR sheet. Do not fold it as well.
  • Avoid gel pens and fountain pens. Multiple markings are invalid.
