IIT JAM (Joint Admission Test) Exam Pattern 2018

  • The exam will have a total of seven papers, which comprises Biotechnology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biological Sciences, Geology, Mathematical Statistics and Physics.
  • Period of the exam will be 3 hours.
  • The medium of the paper will be English language only.
  • There will be total 60 questions asked in the examination which will be divided into three sections.
  • Section A will be of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) type, Section B of Multiple Select Questions (MSQ) type and Section C of Numerical Response Type (NAT) questions.

IIT JAM (Joint Admission Test for M.Sc.) is a national level entrance test organizeed by IISc and IITs on a rotational basis for admission into different postgraduate science programs. Aspirants want admission to M.Sc, joint M.Sc-Ph.D, M.Sc Ph.D dual degree, M.Sc-M.Tech, M.Sc-M.S (Research), integrated Ph.D, Ph.D dual degree and other post-bachelor degree programs provideed at IITs and IISc Bangalore need to complete IIT JAM.

IIT JAM Test Papers 2018

IIT JAM 2018 includes seven test papers. Aspirants can choose to appear in one of the seven test papers for IIT JAM as mentioned below:

  5. Mathematics
  6. Mathematical Statistics
  7. Physics

IIT JAM 2018 Exam Format in Detail

IIT JAM 2018 will be organizeed online in a computer-based test method for all the seven papers. The period of the examination will be of 3 hours. In JAM 2018, there are total 60 questions comprising 100 marks. The question paper will be based on three sections namely Section A, Section B and Section C. The detailed exam format of three sections are mentioned below:

Section A:

Section A will have total 30 MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions). Each question will contain four optional responses, aspirants must choose the right response only. Each question will carry one or two marks. For each right response aspirant will be given 1 or 2 marks and for each wrong response, 1/3 or 2/3 mark will be deducted. Aspirants can response by clicking the given choices.

Section B:

Section C:

This section will consist of 20 NAT (Numerical Response Type) questions. No options will be displayed for these types of questions. Aspirants must respond by pressing the number via the virtual numeric keypad. No Negative marking again.

Marking Scheme for IIT JAM 2018

Each paper in IIT JAM 2018 will contain total 60 questions divided into three sections which will carry 100 marks.

  • Section C contains 10 Numerical Response type questions of 1 mark each and 20 questions of 2 marks each.
  • There is no negative marking in the Section B & C but negative marking will be done for Section A.
  • In section A, for the 1 mark question, 1/3 of marks will be deducted for a wrong response and for a 2 marks questions, 2/3 marks will be deducted for each inaccurate answer. No marks will be deducted for un-attempted questions.
  • Section A contains 10 Multiple choice questions of  1 mark each and 20 MCQs of 2 marks each.
  • Section B contains 10 Multiple-select questions of 2 marks each.

Syllabus of IIT JAM 2018

In IIT JAM Syllabus, some new changes have been introduced. The syllabus will be clearly based on 10+2+3 level. Students can check the latest syllabus of JAM 2018 for all the seven papers.

1. Biological Science (BL)

Basics of Biochemistry, Biophysics, Molecular Biology, General Biology, Microbiology, Cell Biology and Immunology, Mathematical Sciences.

2. Biotechnology (BT)

The weightage of the test paper will be as follows: Biology (44% weightage), Mathematics (18% weightage), Chemistry (20% weightage) and Physics (18% weightage).

  • Chemistry: Atomic Structure: Bohr’s theory and Schrodinger wave equation; Periodicity in properties; Chemical bonding; Properties of s, p, d and f block elements; Complex patterning; Coordination compounds; Chemical equilibria; Chemical thermodynamics
  • Physics (10+2 Level): Physical World and Measurement, Elementary Statics and Dynamics, Kinematics, Laws of Motion, Work, Energy and Power, Electrostatics, Present electricity, Magnetic Effects of Present and Magnetism, Electromagnetic Induction and Alternating Current, Electromagnetic waves, Optics.
  • Biology: General Biology, Biochemistry and Physiology, Basic Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology
  • Mathematics (10+2 Level): Sets, Relations and Functions, Mathematical Induction, Logarithms, Complex numbers, Linear and Quadratic Equations, Sequences and Series, Trigonometry, Three-Dimensional Geometry, Vectors, Matrices and Determinants, Boolean Algebra, Probability, Functions

3. Chemistry (CY)

Basic Mathematical Concepts, Atomic and Molecular Structure, Theory of Gases, Solid state, Chemical Thermodynamics, Chemical and Phase Equilibria, Electrochemistry, Basic Concepts in Organic Chemistry and Stereochemistry, Organic Reaction Mechanism and Synthetic Applications, Qualitative Organic Analysis, Natural Products Chemistry, Periodic Table, Chemical Bonding and Shapes of Compounds, Main Group Elements (s and p blocks), Analytical Chemistry.

4. Physics (PH)

5. Geology (GG)

7. Mathematical Statistics (MS)

The weightage of the test paper will be as follows: Mathematics (40% weightage) and Statistics (60% weightage).

  • Mathematics: Differential Calculus, Sequences and Series, Integral Calculus, Differential Equations, Matrices
  • Statistics: Random Variables, Probability, Standard Distributions, Sampling distributions, Joint Distributions, Estimation, Testing of Hypotheses

Important Instructions for IIT JAM (Joint Admission Test) Exam Pattern 2018

Following are some important instructions regarding IIT JAM 2018 that candidates should keep in my mind before appearing for the test:

  • A scribble pad will be offered for rough work and this should be returned at the end of the examination
  • Mobile phones or any other electronic devices are strictly debarred inside the examination hall.
  • At the end of the 3-hours, the computer will automatically close the examination.
  • Use of unfair means by an aspirant in JAM 2018, whether detected at the time of examination, or at any other stage, will lead to cancellation of his/her candidature as well as disqualification of the aspirant from appearing in JAM in future.
  • Aspirants need to select the response for MCQ and MSQ type questions and to enter the response for NAT questions using only a mouse on a virtual numeric keypad (the keyboard of the computer will be disabled).
  • There is the provision of using an online virtual calculator and hence, aspirants should not bring any calculator with them.
  • Charts, graph sheets, tables, are also NOT allowed inside the examination hall.
