IIT Guwahati Changes Introduced in GATE 2018

IIT Guwahati has announced an official notification for GATE 2018. Deadline for submission of the online application is October 05, 2017. GATE application fee for male aspirants belonging to the unreserved category is INR 1500. For foreign aspirants, the application fee is $100 (US Dollars). All female aspirants and aspirants belonging to SC/ST/PwD must pay INR 750. It is declared that GATE 2018 application forms will be available online on the official website (http://www.gate.iitg.ac.in/) from September 01, 2017.

Aspirants have the choice to change their preferred examination cities until November 17, 2017. GATE 2018 is scheduled to be organizeed on the first two Saturdays and Sundays of February 2018.  Results will be declared on March 17, 2018. Response Keys will be announced two weeks after the completion of the exam. Counseling sessions will commence from the second week of April.

Why is GATE organizeed?

Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering (GATE) is organizeed by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) in the rotation. This test is taken by candidates who wish to pursue Post Graduation courses provideed by the organizing institutes in streams concerned to their Undergraduate stream of Engineering or other degrees.

A vast majority of colleges, institutes and universities providing Post Graduation courses accept score obtained by aspirants as criteria for admissions into their programs.

GATE scores are also used by companies under Public Sector Undertaking (PSUs) as a vital criterion for appointment. 

GATE is designed to test the candidateโ€™s extensive understanding of undergraduate subjects like engineering/architecture/technology.

Subjects for GATE 2018

Based on the choice of Undergraduate degree stream and the PG stream, aspirants must select one of the 23 papers available in GATE. Participants must make this choice at the time of GATE Application form filling itself.

Only one subject or section, General Aptitude, will remain common to all of the 23 GATE paper as far as syllabus is related.

Changes Introduced in GATE 2018

In the official notification announced by the organizing authority, this time only application fee for Foreign Aspirants is increased by $50(US Dollars). In GATE 2018 notification there is no other such changes mention in examination format. Hence, the changes that were implemented for GATE 2017 shall continue to remain for GATE 2018. It is now $100 whereas last year it was $50.

Changes made to GATE exam the earlier year (2017) are said below:

  • GATE for International Aspirants: GATE examination will be organizeed for international aspirants in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka and United Arab Emirates (U.A.E). This has been done with the intention of broadening the scope of education and information due to the involvement and support of other participants from other countries.

As the official website explains, along with the rich diversity and versatility, a foreign aspirant brings with him the wisdom from a various place. The transition duration for foreign aspirants is made as smooth as possible with different scholarships, assistantships, incentives offered to these aspirants. The support and finances are backed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development and other such important ministries which form an integral part of educational systems implemented by Government of India.

  • Addition of New Section in Engineering Sciences (XE):  From the year 2017, GATE for Engineering Sciences subject bearing paper code XE paper, will come with the inclusion of a new section. The questions in this section are based on Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences. This section on Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences will be under Section H. With this new addition, the number of sections in Engineering Sciences (XE) paper has increased to eight. The sections are
  1. Section A- Engineering Mathematics
  2. Section B- Fluid Mechanics
  3. Section C- Material Science
  4. Section D- Solid Mechanics
  5. Section E- Thermodynamics
  6. Section F- Polymer Science and Engineering
  7. Section G- Food Technology
  8. Section H- Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences
  • Addition of New Test Centers: Due to increase in a number of aspirants from a few cities, it was decided to add three new test centres from the year 2017 to reduce the congestion in the existing centres surrounding these areas. These centres are:
  1. Burdwan (IIT Guwahati Zone),
  2. Dibrugarh (IIT Guwahati Zone) and
  3. Gorakhpur (IIT Kanpur Zone).
  • Application procedure:
  1. Aspirants are now welcome to add their second choice of examination centre in the same zone as their first choice of examination centre. Aspirants now have the freedom to choose their second examination centre without having to bother about their first examination centre.
  2. Aspirants must make sure to upload a high-quality image of their thumb impression in the specified pattern at the time of application process itself.
  3. Participants who have cleared their undergraduate qualifying degree must upload a high quality scanned copy of Degree Certificate. Alternatively, aspirants can upload a copy of their final Semester Mark Sheet. 
  4. Participants who are presently in the final year of their undergraduate course can upload a high quality scanned image of their earlier year pre-final year/Semester (5th or 6th semesterโ€™s Mark Sheet). Participants in their final year can also choose to upload a provisional certificate letter from his/her Institute as proof of eligibility criterion. The same condition applies to aspirants from AMIE, AMICE or other such similar programs.
