IES 2018: Career Opportunities and Pay Structure for Engineers

Every year, more than 1 lakh aspirants appear for Engineering Services Exam, also known as IES Exam. Out of this lot, only a few hundred get an opportunity to join in the Indian Engineering Services.

The career opportunities vary for each given field, be it mechanical engineering or electronics and telecommunication. The prospective fields may comprise a position in different Government of India departments namely, Indian Railway Services of Engineers, Indian Naval Armament, etc.

There are a plethora of opportunities available for recent engineering graduates who successfully get via the IES Exam. PAY Structure for IES Engineers

The Pay structure for IES Engineers is nearly equivalent to that of IAS officers, however, there is a definite variation according to the post and position.

Given below is the table explaining the salary structure for IES Engineers of different posts and promotions:

Salary at the Time of Appointment

At the time of hiring as an Assistant Engineer, aspirants are provided the basic salary between INR 15, 600 and INR 39,100. The allowances along with the salary provided are as follows:

  1. Basic salary: INR15,600 – INR 39,100
  2. Grade pay: INR 5,400
  3. Net basic salary becomes: INR 21,000
  4. dearness allowance: 13% of 21,000: 2,730
  5. HRA: 30 % of (21000+2,730): 7,119
  6. Transport allowance: 6600 (for type 1 cities like Delhi, Mumbai, etc.)
  7. Gross salary: 21000+2,730+7,119+6,600= 37,449

The deductions will be done as per the following provisions:

  1. 10 % of gross for pension fund
  2. Central Govt. Employees Group insurance scheme – 325
  3. NPS contribution – 10% of Basic + DA
