GATE Exam Pattern 2019

GATE 2019 is a computer-based exam comprising Multiple Choice Questions and Numerical Response Type Questions. The time period to clear the paper is 3 hours. There are mainly three sections covered under GATE exam namely, General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics and specific subject of the paper. Total 65 questions will be asked for 100 marks.

For every accurate response, 1 or 2 marks will be honored for all papers.On the other hand, for questions carrying 1 mark, there will be negative marking of 1/ 3 marks. 2/3 marks will be deducted for questions carrying 2 marks. GATE Syllabus is available on the official website in the PDF pattern.Now, GATE is held for 23 papers and syllabus for every branch is various from one another.

GATE 2019 is a national level entrance test conducted for those aspirants who seeking to get admission in different postgraduate programs such as Ph.D., M.Tech etc. The test is scheduled for the month of February 2019. GATE Exam Format 2019 in Detail

GATE examination consists of both, Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and Numerical Response Type Questions (NAT). Following is the detailed explanation of GATE Exam Format 2019: The examination is organized via online method only.

  • From the year 2018, a new section will be introduced in the paper of XE namely Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences.
  • In the paper, there will be 25 questions of 1 mark each and 30 questions for 2 marks.
  • The total time period to clear the examination is 3 hours.
  • For MCQs, students will be offered 4 choices and for NAT, questions no choices will be offered.
  • While response Numerical Type Questions, students are advised to enter real number, signed number or unsigned number
  • Total 65 questions of maximum 100 marks will be asked in GATE 2019

GATE Exam Format for GG (Geology and Geophysics) paper

  • Part A includes 25 questions of 1 mark. This part is common for all the students.
  • Part B consists of 30 questions of 2 marks each. This part is further divided into two various sections i.e. Section 1 – Geology, Section 2 – Geophysics, for 10 questions.
  • Geology and Geophysics paper is divided into two parts i.e. Part A and Part B.

GATE Exam Format for XE (Engineering Sciences) paper

  • Section A consists of Engineering Mathematics which is a mandatory section.
  • From B to H, XE consists of 22 questions. 9 of them carrying 1 mark and 13 questions carrying 2 marks
  • 10 questions from GA will be asked
  • In this section total 11 questions will be asked, out of 11 questions 7 of them are of 1 mark and 4 questions are 2 marks.
  • Section A is common for all the aspirants.
  • This paper consists of two sections i.e. Section A and Section B.

GATE Exam Format for XL (Life Sciences) paper

  • Section P includes Chemistry. This is a mandatory section which consists of 15 questions where 5 questions are of 1 mark and 10 questions are 2 marks.
  • From Q to U, students can select any two of the XL sections. Total questions in this section are 20, where 10 questions are of 1 mark and other 10 questions are 2 marks.

Marking Scheme for GATE 2019

There are two types of questions in the question paper i.e. Multiple Choice Question and Numerical Response Type Question. Following is the explanation of marking scheme of GATE 2019:

  • For multiple choice questions, 1/3 marks will be deducted for a wrong response of 1 mark.
  • There is no negative marking for Numerical Response Type Questions.
  • For every accurate response, 1 or 2 marks will be honored according to the type of question.
  • 2/3 marks will be deducted for wrong responses of 2 marks multiple-choice questions

Important Instructions for GATE 2019

Students must follow the below instructions before appearing for the paper:

  • While appearing for the examination, students must carry valid hall ticket and original photo identity proof along with them
  • Participants will be permitted to occupy their seats 35 minutes before the start of the examination
  • Students must report at the examination venue 60 minutes before the commencement of the examination
  • Mobile phones or any other electronic device cannot be used inside the examination hall
  • Printed or hand-written material inside the examination hall is strictly debarred
  • Students are not permitted to leave the examination hall before the end of the examination
  • Aspirants will be offered scribble pads by the examiners for rough work. They need to write his/ her name and registration number on the pad
  • Any kind of communication forms are also strictly debarred inside the examination hall
  • Aspirants will be allowed to appear for the examination only after the credentials are verified.
