CAT Exam Pattern 2019

CAT is an online computer based test which is organized in the last week of December every year. Common Admission Test (CAT) is a national level examination managed by the IIMs (Indian Institutes of Management) on a rotational basis.

  • CAT will include 100 Questions divided into three sections. Questions are of both types - Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and non-MCQs.
  • CAT 2019 will be 180 minutes test. There will be a sectional time-limit of 60 minutes per section.
  • The test is scheduled for two shifts usually, however, it depends upon the number of participants.
  • The question paper will be in English Language only.
  • Aspirants will be honored three marks for each right response while one mark will be deducted from aspirant’s score for each wrong response.
  • The three sections comprised in CAT 2019 are- Quantitative Aptitude, Logical Reasoning, and Verbal Ability.

CAT examination is held every year for admission in the Post-Graduate Business Administration Program for the different IIM, IIT, NITs and much other Government and private institutions situated in India.

Exam Format for CAT 2019

CAT 2019 will be organized in online mode. The question paper will contain 100 questions of both types - Multiple Choice Questions(MCQs) having four options and non-Multiple Choice Questions(non-MCQs).

It will be divided into three sections: Verbal and Reading Comprehension section, Quantitative Aptitude section and Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning.

The period of the exam will be 180 minutes (60 minutes for each section). Aspirants will be honored three marks for each right response while one mark will be deducted for each wrong response.

CAT Exam Format 2019: Section wise Exam Format

Verbal and Reading Comprehension

This section will have questions from English language and grammar. It tests an aspirant’s language and comprehension skills. A total of 34 questions will be asked from this section which will be further divided into 24 MCQ and 10 Non-MCQs.

  • The comprehension questions will test the ability to comprehend the meaning from a given passage.
  • Questions about the language usage and their rules are also expected to appear in the exam. Testing the understanding of basic grammar is also part of the exam.
  • Aspirants will have to clear this section in 60 minutes.

Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning

This section will focus on two aspects- Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning. They will be further divided into 24 MCQ & 8 Non-MCQs. There will be a total of 32 questions from this section. Questions from Data Interpretation (DI) focus on an aspirant’s ability to derive conclusions from a given set of data.

  • Logical Reasoning (LR) section tests an aspirant’s logical thinking and its application to everyday problems.
  • Aspirants will have to clear this section in 60 minutes.

Quantitative Aptitude

This section focuses on numerical problems and will test an aspirant’s mathematical knowledge. Aspirants will have to clear this section in 60 minutes. There is a total of 34 questions in this section. They will be further divided into 24 MCQ and 10 Non-MCQs. It is a test of speed, accuracy, and precision.

Marking Scheme for CAT 2019

CAT Paper will have two types of questions – MCQs and Non-MCQs. Both the type of questions will carry equal marks. There will be total 100 Questions.

For every accurate response, aspirants will be honored 3 marks while 1 mark will be deducted from aspirants’ score for each inaccurate response. No mark will be given or deducted from the question left blank/unresponsive.

Important Instructions for CAT Exam Pattern 2019

These are some important instructions for CAT 2019 that aspirants should follow.

  • The aspirant should neither talk to each other nor discuss any matter during the examination.
  • After the examiner has verified CAT 2019 Hall Ticket of the aspirant, he must sign on the attendance sheet in the presence of the examiner and mention the admit card number also.
  • No aspirant will be allowed to appear at the examination center other than that allotted to him/her in the Hall Ticket.
  • No aspirant will be allowed to enter the examination center/hall after the commencement of examination.
  • Aspirants are not permitted to carry any electronic device and study material at examination hall like (Mobile, Bluetooth, Pager, watch, test series, books, model papers, etc.)
  • The aspirant should follow the instructions given by the examiners in the examination room
  • The judgment of the organizing body shall be final in all matters.
  • Aspirants should not indulge in an argument with the examiners or other staff involved in the examination duty at the examination center.
  • The aspirant should not disturb other aspirants in the examination room and maintain clear silence during the examination.
