The Common Admission Test (CAT) has always been the ultimate deciding factor for admission into the different management schools. They definitely give bonus points to the engineers applying for various courses. But the new change says, that an aspirant’s CAT Score will not be the single determining factor for admissions. This change will be seen from the academic session 2017-2019.

The admission committee will be giving less weight to the CAT score and put greater emphasis on class X and class XII results. This step will ensure “all applicable and competent graduates” a level playing field. Aspirants may please note that the total score for shortlisting interviewees before the preparation of the final merit list, has been halved from 100 marks to 50 marks. The final merit list will also be on 50 points.
Although a change in its admission criteria, the cut-offs haven’t been affected. They have remained similar to the ones that we last year. The CAT cutoff need students of general category to score minimum 90 percentile. However, the CAT cutoff for Scheduled Caste (70), Scheduled Tribe(70), Non-Creamy Other Backward Class (85) and Persons with Disability (70), have remained the same.
Once an aspirant completes the CAT exam, he gets selected for the interview and written test.IIM-C has been one of the toughest colleges to enter. It’s MBA in finance and other consulting courses have been a dream for many various aspirants. In the final phase of the admission procedure, aspirants are selected via their CAT scores and class X and class XII results. There have been special privileges for women too where they are honored additional marks.Till 2018, the aspirants for written test and interview were selected via the below criteria:
Criteria | Weightage (%) |
---|---|
CAT score | 67 |
Class X | 15 |
Class XII | 15 |
Women/ Gender Diversity | 3 |

The admissions chairperson, Mr. Pritam Basu, explains how IIM-C was becoming an increasingly “engineer-only” institute. The institute ended up taking in engineers of a particular background when the CAT score was the prime factor for admission. It only used to award additional weight to the non-engineering graduates in the final selection stage.

With the amendments in the selection process, the institute tries to encourage people of the non-engineering background. This will enhance the pool of graduates from other streams. It will further lead to pouring in of various inputs and perspectives of these students. The classroom discussions with these students add value to knowledge. Moreover, a consistently good performer with good academic background should not be penalized for scoring less in just one entrance test. And hence, the change in admission system.
According to a survey in 2014, the diversity of students in the PGDM batch of 2012-2014 has been described below:
This data completely explains how the PGDM batch of 2012-2014 was majorly engineering dominated.A heavy 95% of the total students in the class, belonged to the engineering stream.Students from Science accounted for 2%And students from Arts, Commerce, and other fields accounted for 1% each.
