CAT 2018 Ways to strengthen vocabulary

Here are few useful techniques to help one speak well and score well.

Make Association

This is one common mode to remember things. We generally tend to remember things when we associate it with our memory. Similar is the case with memorizing words. For instance, when one hears the word umbrella; the mind automatically associate it with rain and the time when one last used it.

Thus, whenever someone hears a new word search for its meaning and make a certain association with the memory so, that when one hears the word next time one can make an immediate identification of its meaning. Adapting this mode would lead to longer retention of the word as a part of the vocabulary.

Identify the Roots

This is one of the best methods to build a strong vocabulary from the knowledge of existing word bank. If one can identify the root word affiliated with any given word, then someone can catch the meaning of the word without knowing that what it means. For example, if someone knows that the root word ‘Re’ is for repletion or repeating something again him/her would be able to identify the word easily where ‘Re’ is attached, like re-election.

Thus, by catching the root of the word, infer the meaning of many words where a single root word is used. This would save time from rote learning of words and their meanings which would offer a logical way to build vocabulary.
