Mumbai University (MU) is the oldest University which was founded in 1857 and situated at Mumbai, Maharashtra and one of the first three universities in India. It has found its name in industrial & International collaborations and runs different professional courses.  Several private colleges in and around Mumbai are affiliated to MU. At a national level, it has excelled in sports, cultural and out-access activities. The University was accorded 5-star status in 2001 & 'A' grade status in April 2012 by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). It has been granted University with Potential for Excellence (UPE) status by UGC and PURSE Scheme by DST.

In the last five years, it has seen 104% increase in undergraduate students. The University of Mumbai is one of the largest universities in the world in terms of the number of students. Moreover, eighteen National/International awards have been won by the teachers in the last five years. More than eighty of its teachers are on different professional bodies.

MU provides Ph.D. Programme in the related subjects of research of the faculty of arts, commerce, science, law and technology. No other university in India provides such choice in terms of specialization. The programme is for an at least of 3 years.

The University invites applications for admission to the Ph.D. Programme for the academic year 2017-18. The admission to these programmes is done via Mumbai University PhD PET 2017 which is to be held on January 3rd, 2017 (tentative). This objective entrance exam tests aspirants in relevant subjects of separate faculties. The applications for admission must be submitted by November 30th, 2016 (tentative).

Eligibility Criteria for University of Mumbai, Mumbai Ph.D. Admissions 2018

Ph.D. (African Studies), Ph.D. (Arabic) & Ph.D. (Education)

You should fulfil any of the following criteria:

  • You should be a graduate of this or any other recognised University and be working in National Laboratories/Institutes/Government/ Private Organization, nominated/sponsored by the respective employer.
  • You should have a Master’s degree in relevant branch from a recognised university with at least 55% marks in total for general category and 50% marks in case of reserved category.
  • You must have passed M.Phil. Degree examination of this University or of any other University recognised by the University as equivalent thereto.
  • You should have qualified in /NET/SET/GATE/JRF examination of the apex bodies in higher/technical/ professional education such as CSIR/UGC/ICAR or other equivalent examination.
  • You should be a teacher having full-time teaching experience of minimum two years in Degree College or five years in Junior College.
  • You must have passed Master’s Degree by Research of this University or of any other University recognised by this University as equivalent thereto.

Note: A aspirant belonging to backward class from Maharashtra state only is applicable for claiming seat under reserved category.

How to apply for University of Mumbai, Mumbai Ph.D. Admissions 2018?

For PET:

You can download the Application Form from the University website.                    

You should then fill the form with the necessary individual and educational details.

Application Fee: You should pay the following Application Fee of Rs. 1000 for general category and Rs. 500 for reserved category, either through

  • 'By cash' in Room No 13, Ground Floor, University of Mumbai, Fort, Mumbai 400030 during 11.00 am to 2.30 pm between 16th November 2015 to 30th November 2015 (except holidays)
  • Demand Draft in the name of ‘Finance & Accounts Officer of the University of Mumbai’ payable at Mumbai

You should enclose the DD / Receipt of such payment with the Application Form and submit the same to the Thesis Section Room No 129, 1st Floor, University of Mumbai, Fort, Mumbai-400032

If you want concession from PET 2017, you should skip the above procedure, and straight apply via the procedure given below.

For Admission to Ph.D. Programme:

You should apply straight to the related Research Centre affiliated with Mumbai University.

You must pay the Application fee of Rs. 100 in the form of a Demand Draft or cash to the related recognised Research Centre of the University of Mumbai within 15 working days from the date of the declaration of the Ph.D. Entrance Test (PET) results.

Selection Procedure of University of Mumbai, Mumbai Ph.D. Admissions 2018

Ph.D. (African Studies), Ph.D. (Arabic) & Ph.D. (Education)

You will be selected on the basis of Ph.D. Entrance Test (PET) 2017 followed by an Individual Interview at the Research Centre should you qualify the PET exam. The result of this exam is valid for a duration of three years.

Concessions: You are exempted from writing the test:

  • If you have qualified GATE/SET/NET/JRF exam and are holders of teachers’ fellowships of apex bodies like CSIR/UGC/ICAR/ICMR/DBT.
  • If you have finished an M. Phil. The syllabus for Mumbai PhD PET 2017 exam shall consist of different topics in mandatory/core subject and papers of postgraduate degree level of the exam prescribed by Mumbai University for the subject.

    The question papers will include three type of questions

    • Objective type of Questions: 40 marks
    • Long responses: 30 marks
    • Short responses: 30 marks

    You should secure an at least of 50 marks in PET. Degree from any other recognised Universities in India as per the UGC guidelines from time to time.
