Thiruvalluvar University is located in Vellore and is an affiliating University. The University currently has seven departments, namely, Tamil, English, Economics, Zoology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Bio-Technology. The University provides M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs in 7 various specializations, via these departments.

The minimum eligibility for admission to both M.Phil. and PhD program at Thiruvalluvar University is a Postgraduate degree in a relevant branch. The University takes admission in M.Phil program in two categories, i.e., Full-time, and Part-time. In case of PhD programs the categories are Full Time, Part Time, and Independent Research Scholars.

The Thiruvalluvar University intakes students to their PhD programs in four sessions throughout the year while for M.Phil. program the admission is organized in only one session. The University organizes an entrance exam for admission to both the research programs. For admission to PhD courses, a aspirant has to undergo an additional personal interview round after appearing for the entrance test.

M.Phil/Ph.D in Science & M.Phil/Ph.D in Arts

Thiruvalluvar University has the following seven departments and provides research program in each of its departments:

M.Phil. Eligibility Criteria:

For admission to M.Phil. program an aspirant must hold a postgraduate degree in a relevant branch. An aspirant should apply for admission to the M.Phil program only after qualifying their postgraduation degree. Also, aspirants who have finished their post graduation degree with less than 17 years of the total period of study are not qualified to apply for this program. The category-wise eligibility is given below:

Eligibility:

For M.Phil. (Full-Time): A aspirant must have a minimum of 55% marks for general category and 50% marks for SC/ST category, in post-graduate degree. Aspirants who are working as Full-time Research Assistants/ Project Fellows/JRF/SRF in the time bound research schemes or one year period or more in University Departments, Research Departments of affiliated colleges/ Recognized Research Institutions are also qualified for admission.

For M.Phil. (Part-Time): Aspirant must be  employed in any related organization or institution located within the jurisdiction of the State of Tamil Nadu or Research Institutions located outside the State of Tamil Nadu recognized by Thiruvalluvar University with a minimum of 55% of marks for general category and 50% marks for SC/ST category, in the Master’s Degree.

Teachers working in universities / affiliated colleges / Polytechnics / Higher Secondary Schools and High Schools approved by State Board or Central Board of Secondary Education or Education instructors of I.A.F are also qualified to apply for M.Phil., (PT). Such aspirants will have to produce a no-objection Certificate alloted by the DCE / Registrar (for teachers of Self-financing institutions) /Director of Technical Education (for teachers of Polytechnics) / CEO (for teachers of schools).

Ph.D. Eligibility Criteria:

Thiruvalluvar University provides admission to the Ph.D. programs in three various categories:

  • Full-time
  • Part-time
  • Independent Research Scholar

M.Phil/Ph.D in Science & M.Phil/Ph.D in Arts

M.Phil.

The aspirant wants admission to M.Phil program at Thiruvalluvar University, should apply in the prescribed pattern only. Aspirants are recommended to first ascertain the number of vacancies available in their desired program and department with the related Department and Supervisor at the University. The application form for the M.Phil program can be obtained in any of the following ways:

  • The application form is available for download on the University Website
  • The application form can be obtained from the Registrar, Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore-632 115 on payment of Rs.200/- for M.Phil., in the form of a Demand Draft on a Nationalized Bank drawn in favour of the Registrar, Thiruvalluvar University, payable at Vellore with a requisition indicating clearly, the Programme (M.Phil.,) either regular or Part-Time, for which the application is need.

An aspirant applying for M.Phil. at TU is need to make two copies of their application form. 

First copy: The original copy of the application form is to be submitted to the recognized department of the university / affiliated college, where you seek admission. In case of downloaded application, it is to be submitted straight to the recognized department of the University / affiliated college along with the Xerox copy of the DD for Rs.200/- for the cost of application and registration Fee.

Second Copy: A photocopy of the original application or the downloaded application is to be straight sent to Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore, along with the original DD for Rs.200/- for the cost of application and Registration Fee, from a Nationalized Bank, drawn in favour of the Registrar, Thiruvalluvar University, payable at Vellore.

Note: The applications should be accompanied by properly attested photocopies of the following certificates:

  1. Mark / Grade Certificate of the qualifying PG (PG) course.
  2. Provisional / Degree Certificates of the Under-Graduate (UG) and Post-Graduate (PG) Courses.
  3. Transfer and Organize Certificates (alloted by the Institution last studied)
  4. Community Certificate
  5. Service Certificate alloted by the Employer, Head Master / Principal / Head of the Institution (in the case you are applying for part-time Programme, specifying the total period of the service put in by you in their organization)
  6. For the part-time programme, you should produce no objection Certificate alloted by the DCE / Registrar (for teachers of Self-financing institutions) / Director of Technical Education (for teachers of Polytechnics) / CEO (for teachers of schools).
Ph.D.

The admission to Ph.D. programs is organized in four sessions every year. The complete application form with the necessary certificates for admission to Ph.D. programs must access the University office before the first working day of January, April, July, and October for provisional registration. The application form for Ph.D. programs can be obtained in the following ways:

  • The application form can be downloaded straight from the University Website.
  • The application form can be obtained from the Registrar, Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore-632 115 on payment of Rs.200/-  which should be remitted via NEFT/RTGS method with the following details:

The aspirant is expected to retain and send the original Bank Challan with UTR number with the application form with a requisition indicating clearly, the programme (Ph.D.) in either full time or part-time basis.

The aspirant needs to send two copies of their application form. The details are as below:

First Submission: The original application is to be submitted to the research department of the university/research department of the affiliated college, where you seek admission. In case of downloaded application, it is to be submitted straight to the university research department/research department of the affiliated college along with the photocopy of the Bank Challan for Rs. 200/- towards the cost of application.

Second Submission: The photocopy of the original application or downloaded application is to be straight sent to the University, along with the original Bank Challan for Rs.200/- towards the cost of application.

The applications should be accompanied with attested photocopies of the following certificates and forwarded by the HOD and Principal of the affiliated college / Dean of the University.

  1. Xerox copy of the Mark / Grade Certificate of the qualifying PG (PG) course. 
  2. Xerox copy of the Mark / Grade Certificate of the M.Phil. Course.
  3. Xerox copy of the Provisional / Degree Certificates of the under Graduate (UG) and Post-Graduate (PG) and M.Phil. Courses.
  4. Xerox copy of the Transfer and Organize Certificates (alloted by the Institution last studied)
  5. Xerox copy of the Community Certificate
  6. Xerox copy of the Service Certificate alloted by the Employer, Head Master / Principal / Head of the Institution (in the case of aspirants applying for part-time programme, specifying the total period of the service put in by the aspirants in their organization)
  7. For part-time programme, you should produce Xerox copy of the NOC alloted by the DCE / Director of Technical Education (for teachers of Polytechnics) /CEO (for teachers of schools).
  8. A brief research proposal in 500 words in consultation with the proposed guide.

Thiruvalluvar University M.Phil. & Ph.D. Admissions 2018 Selection Procedure

M.Phil/Ph.D in Science & M.Phil/Ph.D in Arts

M.Phil. 

Your selection will be based on the marks obtained in the basic qualifying examinations (50% of marks) and the entrance examination (50% of marks) organized by the institute.

Entrance Test:

The paper will have multiple-choice type questions for 50 marks. The Rank List based on the marks obtained will be prepared for a maximum of 100 marks accordingly.

Concessions: If you have eligible UGC/CSIR (JRF) Examination / SLET/ GATE/teacher fellowship, you are exempted from the entrance test.
Ph.D.

You will be selected based on a two-step procedure: Entrance Test and Interview.

The total marks secured in the Entrance test (40 marks) and interview (10 marks) put together amounts to 50 and the remaining 50 marks is for the qualifying Post Graduate examination in the subject related and the rank list will be prepared for a maximum of 100 marks, accordingly. You should secure at least 25 marks out of 50 marks put together in the Entrance written test and interview.

Entrance Test:

The test will examine Research aptitude, Depth/grasp of the subject, intellectual ability and general knowledge of the aspirants. But you should undertake the interview. The Departmental Research Committee of the related Department may design and set the question paper entrance written examination comprising of objective questions for 40 marks.

Concessions: If you have eligible UGC/CSIR (JRF) Examination NET/SLET/GATE and teacher fellowship from the proposed entrance examination, you will be exempted from writing the Entrance Test. For such aspirants, the total marks shall be 60 only.

Note

  1.  If an aspirant is from a state, other than Tamil Nadu, then they shall be considered under Open Competition except for those aspirants belonging to the SC/ST category.
  2. 3% seats are reserved for Physically handicapped aspirants. This reservation is offered on the total number of seats provided by the related department.
