Sidha Kanho Birsha University (SKBU) follows the regulation for research programme leading to the award of the degree of the Doctor of Philosophy, the norms of which shall apply to every aspirant looking for the admission, registration, organize and conferment of the Degree. The University holds an Entrance test for admission of the aspiring aspirants with various specializations. Sidha Kanho Birsha University invites admission to its Ph.D. Programme.
The university grants more than one chance to its students for submission of their thesis. Each Ph.D. candidate, before registration to the programme, shall need to undertake course work for a minimum duration of one semester. The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) shall be honored to an aspirant only on the basis of original research work of merit.

Students must have the master degree in the relevant field to obtain admission in Ph.D. An aspirant with post-B.Sc. - B.Tech, M.B.B.S. Those aspirants belonging to SC/ST/OBC quota or those who are physically challenged (5% of disability) or such other percent (as decided by the Government of India) may be relaxed. Ordinarily, aspirants seeking admission to the Ph. D. coursework will appear at the entrance exam on the subject in which he/she had obtained 55% marks in the Master degree or equivalent or the relevant related subject.
The aspirants who have completely and cleared UGC-NET (including JRF)/ UGC-CSIR NET (including JRF)/SLET/GATE /Teacher Fellowship shall not be required to appear at the Ph.D. entrance exam
For Foreign Students Only:
Only Foreign aspirants holding suitable visa as per the rules of Government of India shall be admitted to the Ph.D. Programme.
All aspirants applying for the Ph.D. Programme must have obtained 55% marks in his/her master’s degree (or equivalent degree) to be qualified to enroll for the programme of the University.
/ B.D.S. or equivalent degrees in Law, Social Science, Business Management, Humanities and Library Science are qualified to apply.
Ordinarily, a Ph.D. student shall be registered for the Ph.D programme in a subject in which the aspirant has obtained his/her Master’s degree. However, if an aspirant applies for the Ph.D programme in a subject various from the Master’s subject, the matter shall be in the hands of the Departmental Board of Research Studies of the respective subject.
The registration of the aspirant shall remain valid for a duration of 6 years only. or equivalent degrees in Law, Social Science, Business Management, Humanities and Library Science may apply for registration of Ph.D. programme after having cleared the Entrance Test and after being admitted to the Ph.D. coursework programme, as per the provisions laid down by the university.
After fulfillment of the above-mentioned admission requirements, the aspirant shall apply for the registration to the Ph.D. programme via the form prescribed for the purpose along with non-refundable fees as decided by the University.
An aspirant with post-B.Sc. - B.Tech, M.B.B.S. If the related department does not find the synopsis fit for recommendation even after the revision, the case shall be sent to the Vice Chancellor for the final judgment.
An aspirant after having eligible for the Ph.D. Programme (written test and viva voce test for the exempted aspirants) shall undertake and complete the courses/ modules equivalent to one-semester coursework prior to getting registered for the Ph.D. programme.
The registration application in the prescribed form of the aspirant must state:
Subject or interdisciplinary field in which the aspirant desires to have the degree
Area of specialization
Title of research
Name of the supervisor
Name of the University Department or recognized Research Institution where the Ph.D. programme will be carried out
A student shall be allowed to re-register only once only after the submission of requisite fees. / B.D.S. The continuity of the research work will, however, be maintained and the aspirant shall be exempted from all other procedural formalities if finished previous.
The application of the aspirant shall be accompanied by 6 copies of the synopsis of proposed research, which shall not exceed 1000 words and must comprise a title, a short introduction, a brief overview of literature pertaining to the work, Research objectives, research methodologies and the plan of the work, duly countersigned by the supervisor/joint supervisor.
The title of the thesis and the synopsis shall be modified only once, if necessary. However, any modification will not be permitted after submission of the seminar report by related Departmental Board of Research Studies.
The application of registration of the aspirant will be considered by the related Departmental Board of Research Studies at its meeting where the members will ask relevant questions to the aspirants concerning the proposed title and area of research work.
If the related Departmental Board of Research Studies does not find the synopsis/plan of work as fit for the recommendation, the aspirant shall revise the work in the light of the suggestions made by the board, which shall again be examined by the department within 3 months. In general, a thesis cannot be submitted for adjudication by the invigilators before the expiry of 2 years from the date of registration.
Registration to the Ph.D. programme will be sanctioned after the approval of the Vice-Chancellor or his nominee and on the recommendation of the related department.
A student shall have to apply for the re-registration before the expiry of the tenure of the existing registration, in case the student fails to submit the thesis within the given time.
The aspirant, in a suitable case, however, shall submit necessary migration certificate to register them to the Ph.D programme.
An aspirant wants admission to the Ph.D. programme shall appear for the entrance test in the subject in which he/she has obtained the master’s degree or in a relevant concerned/equivalent subject.
A Ph.D. participant may be admitted to the university via an entrance test only. These numbers will be advertised and thus, admissions to the program shall be organized on regular basis.
The entrance test shall be followed by an interview, organized by the related department of the University, where the aspirant will be assessed on the basis of his/her research interest in the relevant field by the Departmental Board of Research Studies.
Note: The aspirants who have been exempted from appearing for the written entrance test also need to appear for the interview.
Admission criteria for Foreign Students: The Non-Indian aspirants need to get a clearance from the Government of India and/or from suitable authorities, if any, for admission to the Ph.D. programme.
However, a student who has cleared UGC/CSIR (JRF) Examinations/NET/SET/SLET/GATE/Teacher Fellowship or any other examination that may be deemed equivalent by the Executive Council or having passed the M.Phil/M.Tech/M.D./M.E./M.Pharm or equivalent examination shall not need to appear for the Ph.D. written test.
Admission to the aspirants holding a qualifying degree from other Universities may be given admission after the determination of equivalence of the qualifying degree by the relevant university and after the fulfillment of the mentioned admission criteria.
The total number of seats in the Ph.D. programme under each department shall be mentioned on the University website.
The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) shall be honored to an aspirant only on the basis of original research work of merit incorporated in a thesis, advised by a board of invigilators/adjudicators and successfully defended by the aspirant during the viva-voce.
The thesis shall demonstrate that the selected aspirant has a technical mastery of the chosen field of investigation and is capable of doing scholarly work.
