Founded in 1857MU (Mumbai University) is one of the first three universities in India with several private colleges in and around Mumbai affiliated to it. MU has three campuses in Mumbai and is one of the largest universities in the world in terms of the number of students. In addition to regular undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) courses, the university provides research programmes along with diplomas and certificate courses. 

Those want admission can download the application form and submit them upon completion to the university office. Aspirants must attach supporting documents and need procedures fee along with the duly filled-in applications to complete the registration procedure.

The University provides M.Phil programme under the Faculty of Arts, Science, Commerce, Law, and Finance in multiple branches including sociology, philosophy, education, and commerce. Only aspirants with the relevant qualifying degree are qualified to apply for the programme. Aspirants will be admitted to the course based on their performance in Written Entrance Exam followed by a Personal Interview, organized by the respective Faculty of the university.

Eligibility Criteria

M.Phil. (Law)

aspirants are requested to check the eligibility criteria before filling the application form. aspirants found ineligible will be rejected at any stage in the admission procedure and no grievances will be entertained in this regard 

Applicants will be shortlisted for the Research Aptitude Test (RAT) on basis of the meeting the following considerations with regard to educational qualifications, work experience, and research proposal: 

Educational Qualifications: The minimum academic qualification for admission to the integrated M.Phil & Direct PhD Programs is a 2nd Class Master’s or equivalent  designation in the relevant subject awarded by a recognized university in India or abroad, with at least an average of 55 percent of aggregate marks, or a grade point average of 3.5 under the seven-point scale of the UGC In the case of SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/differently-abled aspirants, the minimum eligibility is an average of 50% of aggregate marks, or a grade point average of 3.05 aspirants who are likely to complete all the requirements of their final year Master’s  designation examinations by 01st July are also eligible to apply for M.Phil, provided they have successfully completed their first year Master’s  designation 

The aspirant must possess Master’s degree in the relevant branch with minimum 55% aggregate of marks (in case of general category) and 50% marks (in case of reserved category) from a recognized University.

M.Phil. (Sociology)

  • Aspirants from other branches may apply and will be considered on the case basis, subject to clearance of an Aptitude Test. 
  • Aspirants who have eligible M.Phil. Entrance test / GATE/UGC-JRF/UGC-NET/UGC-SET are qualified for admission
  • The aspirant must possess Masters Degree (MA) in any branch under Social Sciences with minimum 55% aggregate of marks.

Aspirants can download the prescribed application form along with the eligibility form available at the official university website

Duly filled-in forms containing the need for personal and educational details must be submitted in person to the related department office.

Application Fee: Aspirant should pay the following fee in cash at the time of submission of application forms:

  • Rs. 320 (eligibility fee) if you are from other University (other than Maharashtra state)
  • Rs. 220 (enrollment fee) if you are from other University (other than Maharashtra state)
  • Rs. 220 (eligibility fee) if you are from universities in Maharashtra

Enclosures: Aspirant should attach the self-certified copies of the following documents:

  • Caste certificates (in case of reserved category)
  • Post-graduation Part – I & II Mark sheets and Degree Certificate
  • Graduation Mark sheets & Degree Certificate

Aspirants should submit finished applications, along with the need documents and fee, in person only at the respective Department of the Mumbai University between 11.00 a.m. – 01.00 p.m. and 02.00 p.m. on all weekdays and first, third and fifth Saturdays.  - 04.00 p.m.

Note: Applications sent by post will not be accepted by the university.

Selection Procedure

M.Phil. (Law)

  • Both the examinations will be organized by the respective Department of the University. The syllabus for the written exam will be based on your master’s degree course.
  • Aspirants will be shortlisted for admission to M.Phil programme on the basis of their performance in the Written Entrance Examination (80 marks) + Oral Interview (20 marks). The total passing marks will be 50 including marks secured in Written & Oral Examination.

M.Phil. (Sociology)

Aspirants will be shortlisted on the basis of marks scored in the entrance test and personal interview, both organized by the university itself.
