Founded in 1966, Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) is a public university with 18 schools, 72 departments, and 109 affiliated colleges. In addition to it, 66 UG and 45 PG courses are provided in the affiliated Colleges. Diploma / Certificate courses in the different departments. Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) has 24 autonomous colleges, 14 aided colleges, 33 self-financing colleges, 18 approved institutions, 4 evening colleges, 6 constituent colleges and one University College. Courses provided by MKU comprise 41 postgraduate and 35 M.Phil programmes, along with 17 Diploma / P.G.
The university provides the Ph.D. program in different branches of Science and Social Science under UGC Non-NET fellowship scheme. It also consolidates fellowship of INR 14000 for initial 2 years which may be increased to an amount INR 16000for the third year.
Admission to the Ph.D. program is done via marks secured in the postgraduate program with minimum 55% aggregate. For SC/ST students, the need percentage of marks need is 50% aggregate.
The university offers two types of Ph.D. which are full time and part-time. So the eligibility criteria for both are explained below:
Aspirants must possess a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree to register for Ph.D. under 10+2+3+2 format or equivalent in any branch with not less than 50% aggregate marks in master’s degree.
The aspirant must work for at least duration of 3 years as research scholar concerned to the main discipline of knowledge of master’s degree.
If the aspirant is selected under this scheme, he/she shall be permitted to continue research as full time in research scholar department.

M.Phil/Ph.D in Arts , M.Phil/Ph.D in Science & M.Phil/Ph.D in Commerce
For applying to Ph.D. programmes of the MKU University, the aspirant should follow the given process:
The separate application form should be filled by aspirant if they wish to apply for more than one course. Students belonging to states other than Tamil Nadu are treated as ‘Other Communities’
Students should write their name, clear address, and course for which they applied in Block letters on the reverse side of the demand draft
The aspirant should fill the prescribed application form available on the university website and send it along with the registration fee and relevant certificates before the last date. Registration fees should be submitted via demand draft (DD) only
Photocopies of all the certificates along with application form should be in English only and must be sent to the following address:

Along with the application forms, aspirants have to submit photocopies, attested by the Gazetted officer, of the following certificates:
SSLC,HSE mark statement
U.G./P.G. Degree Marks statement /Grade certificates/ Provisional Certificate
Community certificate obtained from Tahsildar related otherwise it will not be taken into account.
Income Certificate obtained 3 months prior to the date of advertisement (for SC/ST/Blind aspirants only)
Certificate of Physically Challenged / Leprosy cured if anyone has.
+2 marks statement (mandatory)
Two self-addressed stamped (Rs.10/-) envelope
SC/ST aspirants are exempted from the payment of Registration Fee for only one course.

Aspirants are selected on the basis of marks secured in the university entrance examination and interview.
Aspirants can take admission in Ph.D. straight or via M.Phil. programme. Aspirants will be selected on the basis of interview organized by their respective research department/ center/ institutions.
