Madras University provides different undergraduate, postgraduate and research degree courses in diverse fields including Arts, Science, Commerce, and Management. The University of Madras organizes separate admission procedures for research programs viz. Master of Philosophy (M.Phil)and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). The degree can be obtained in Full Time, Part Time (Internal), and Part-Time (External) mode.
The university commences the application procedure for M.Phil. courses in the month of June every year. The registrations for the doctorate course is carried out in four sessions across the year i.e. January, April, July, and October. The university is currently organizing the admission drive for Ph.D. courses for the October session. Aspirants can also download the Ph.D. Guide Recognition Form for the present academic session.

Students, who seeking to pursue Ph.D. in full-time mode, have to complete all the coursework within three years i.e. after joining the course and before submission of the thesis.
Students who wish to apply under part-time method have to complete the coursework in minimum four years. Students who have the interdisciplinary M.Phil degree or M.Litt (in relevant branch) will be given relaxation of one year in order to complete the program.

The following aspirants are qualified to register for the full-time Ph.D. programme:
The aspirant with any of the degrees need for full-time Ph.D. program and fulfills any of the below mentioned criteria, is qualified for applying to Part-time Ph.D. program:
Degree practicing as an advocate in any Court of Law or serving as a Legal Advisor to/in a registered firm/institution within the territorial jurisdiction of the University with a minimum of Four Years of total working experience after qualifying degree.
Aspirants with any of the qualifications from a recognized university, and working as a teacher, scientist in National/State level institutions, Universities, Research and Development (R&D) Centres/Laboratories and institutions outside the territorial jurisdiction of this University (India/Abroad) can apply for part-time basis two years after their qualifying degree, if they are permitted by their organization to pursue research while continuing their employment.
A supervisor/doctoral committee would prescribe coursework, examination, and research work, which the aspirant has to complete under a Supervisor for a minimum of Six Months.
Apart from the supervisor from the university, a supervisor of the Ph.D. program will be recruited from the Institute of the aspirant's employment.
For Full-Time M.Phil:
Aspirants should have a Master's Degree in the above mentioned subjects with a minimum of 55% in the qualifying exam.

The application form along with the prospectus for Ph.D. courses is available for download on the official website. The aspirant needs to download the application form and submit the duly filled-in form at the corresponding department of the university, where they wish to undergo their research before the last date. The aspirant must also submit a demand draft of INR 500 from any nationalized bank, drawn in favor of “The Registrar, University of Madras, Chepauk, Chennai 600005”. SC/ST aspirants are exempted from paying the application fee.
The aspirant also required submitting certain documents along with the application form to the related department. The list of documents is given below:
The application form can be collected from the University campus or downloaded from the official website. An aspirant will have to pay an application fee of INR 300 while purchasing the application form from University counter. In case of a downloaded application, an aspirant will have to submit a Demand Draft of 300 INR from any nationalized bank drawn in favor of “The Registrar, University of Madras, Chepauk, Chennai 600005”.

The university organizes separate entrance examinations for admission to its research programs. The period of the test is of two hours. The test is of objective type and consists of questions from research aptitude and related subject to which an aspirant has applied for. The merit list is prepared on the basis of marks scored in the entrance examination and qualifying examination (weightage given to each is 50:50 respectively).
Admission to Ph.D. courses is based on performance in the entrance examination and qualifying degree. The equal amount of weightage is being given to each criterion. The entrance test of 50 marks will be organized by the respective departments of the University. The entrance test will have two sections as given below:

An aspirant must secure a minimum of 25 marks out of 50 marks in the entrance test. Aspirants who have been granted a fellowship by UGC-CSIR etc. or Project Fellows recruited in major Research Projects by funding agencies or Teachers working in affiliated colleges are exempted from appearing in the written test.
