Madras University provides different undergraduate, postgraduate and research degree courses in diverse fields including Arts, Science, Commerce, and Management. The University of Madras organizes separate admission procedures for research programs viz. Master of Philosophy (M.Phil)and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.).  The degree can be obtained in Full Time, Part Time (Internal), and Part-Time (External) mode.

  • The university organizes entrance examination for selection of aspirants to the research programs.
  • Aspirants who have cleared UGC/CSIR NET are exempted from appearing in the entrance examination.

The university commences the application procedure for M.Phil. courses in the month of June every year. The registrations for the doctorate course is carried out in four sessions across the year i.e. January, April, July, and October. Madras University M.Phil & Ph.D Admission 2018 Eligibility Criteria

M.Phil/ Ph.D. in Arts, M.Phil/ Ph.D. in Education & M.Phil/ Ph.D. in Science

Students, who seeking to pursue Ph.D. in full-time mode, have to complete all the coursework within three years i.e. after joining the course and before submission of the thesis.

Students who wish to apply under part-time method have to complete the coursework in minimum four years. Students who have the interdisciplinary M.Phil degree or M.Litt (in relevant branch) will be given relaxation of one year in order to complete the program.

Eligibility for Full-time Ph.D:

The following aspirants are qualified to register for the full-time Ph.D. programme:

  • ACA, FCA, AICWAI, ACSI qualifications of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India, and Institute of Company Secretaries of India offered the aspirants have secured:
  • Aspirant with Bachelor’s Degree in Veterinary Science, Ayurveda, Siddha, Homeopathy, Unani Medicines etc., with two years Senior House Surgeons/equivalent special training in concerned branches of two years duration.
  • A aspirant with Master’s Degree in Arts, Sciences, Fine Arts, Languages, Commerce, Education, Management Science, Law, Engineering, Technology, Architecture and Medicine including the Degree of Doctor of Medicine (M.D. or M.R.C.P), or Master of Surgery (M.S. or F.R.C.S./M.R.C.S.), Indian Medicine, Veterinary Science, M.Pharm. and Agriculture from any recognized university.
  • An aspirant with M.B.B.S. Degree with two years of Senior House Surgeons /Special training or equivalent recognized by the Medical Council of India or competent authority.
  1. One of the above qualifications after the lapse of at least two years after obtaining an Under Graduate degree from any recognized university.
  2. Minimum 55% marks in the aggregate in the qualifying degree examination.
  • Research fellows/Research Assistants/Technical Assistants/Project Fellows/Project Assistants/Training Officers in extension departments approved by the University, recruited in the research projects funded by recognized agencies/Government are also qualified to register for Ph.D. on a full-time basis in the same department offered they satisfy the eligibility criteria laid above.

Eligibility for Part-time Ph.D. (Internal):

The aspirant with any of the degrees need for full-time Ph.D. program and fulfills any of the below mentioned criteria, is qualified for applying to Part-time Ph.D. program:

  • Teacher of affiliated colleges in the following branches, with one year of teaching experience without M.Phil or SLET/NET:
  • Research Assistant/Technical Assistant recruited on a permanent basis by the University.
  • Employed other than as a teacher in a permanent job within the territorial jurisdiction of the University with a minimum of Four Years of total working experience, after the qualifying degree.
  • An aspirant with M.L. If such a supervisor is not available, Head of the institution shall take its place.

    Degree
    practicing as an advocate in any Court of Law or serving as a Legal Advisor to/in a registered firm/institution within the territorial jurisdiction of the University with a minimum of Four Years of total working experience after qualifying degree.
  • Teacher of affiliated college with NET/SLET qualification or M.Phil. Degree with one year of teaching experience after M. Phil degree and Teachers of Higher Secondary Schools/High Schools and Polytechnic with two years of experience after the qualifying degree.
  • A teacher working in the Department of the University or in an affiliated College, Higher Secondary School or High School or Polytechnic within the territorial jurisdiction of the University.

Eligibility for Part-time Ph.D. (External)

Aspirants with any of the qualifications from a recognized university, and working as a teacher, scientist in National/State level institutions, Universities, Research and Development (R&D) Centres/Laboratories and institutions outside the territorial jurisdiction of this University (India/Abroad) can apply for part-time basis two years after their qualifying degree, if they are permitted by their organization to pursue research while continuing their employment.

A supervisor/doctoral committee would prescribe coursework, examination, and research work, which the aspirant has to complete under a Supervisor for a minimum of Six Months.

Apart from the supervisor from the university, a supervisor of the Ph.D. program will be recruited from the Institute of the aspirant's employment.

M.Phil. (Ancient Indian History Culture & Archaeology) , M.Phil. (Development Economics) & M.Phil. (Economics)

For Full-Time M.Phil:

Aspirants should have a Master's Degree in the above mentioned subjects with a minimum of 55% in the qualifying exam.

For Part-Time M.Phil:

  1. Teachers working in University Departments.
  2. Teachers working in Affiliated colleges whose qualifications are approved by the University
  3. Teachers of Polytechnics approved by the Director of the Technical Education or teachers of Higher secondary and High schools approved either by State Board or Central Board of Secondary Education or Educational Instructors of IAF.

    Madras University M.Phil & Ph.D Admission 2018 Application Procedure

    M.Phil/ Ph.D. in Arts, M.Phil/ Ph.D. in Education & M.Phil/ Ph.D. in Science

    For Ph.D.:

    The application form along with the prospectus for Ph.D. courses is available for download on the official website. The aspirant needs to download the application form and submit the duly filled-in form at the corresponding department of the university, where they wish to undergo their research before the last date. The aspirant must also submit a demand draft of INR 500 from any nationalized bank, drawn in favor of “The Registrar, University of Madras, Chepauk, Chennai 600005”. SC/ST aspirants are exempted from paying the application fee.

    The aspirant also required submitting certain documents along with the application form to the related department. The list of documents is given below:

    • Birth Certificate / S.S.L.C. (for Part-Time aspirants)
    • Community Certificate
    • 10th std, HSC/UG/PG/M.Phil. Mark Statements and Convocation Certificates
    • Approval of qualification/recruitment of teachers by the University of Madras
    • Minutes of the Departmental Selection Committee recommending the aspirant to do Ph.D. programme.
    • A Service Certificate and No Objection Certificate in original from the Head of the Institution where the aspirant is employed indicating the date of recruitment. (for Part-Time aspirants)
    • A copy of recruitment order alloted by recruiting authority.
    • A certificate from the Director of Technical Education / District Educational Officer stating that the polytechnics / Higher Secondary / High School where the teacher is employed has been recognized by the government. (for Part-Time aspirants)

    For M.Phil:

    The application form can be collected from the University campus or downloaded from the official website. An aspirant will have to pay an application fee of INR 300 while purchasing the application form from University counter. In case of a downloaded application, an aspirant will have to submit a Demand Draft of 300 INR from any nationalized bank drawn in favor of “The Registrar, University of Madras, Chepauk, Chennai 600005”.

    Madras University M.Phil & Ph.D. Admission Procedure 2018

    M.Phil/ Ph.D. in Arts, M.Phil/ Ph.D. in Education & M.Phil/ Ph.D. in Science

    The university organizes separate entrance examinations for admission to its research programs. The period of the test is of two hours. The test is of objective type and consists of questions from research aptitude and related subject to which an aspirant has applied for. The merit list is prepared on the basis of marks scored in the entrance examination and qualifying examination (weightage given to each is 50:50 respectively). 

    Admission to Ph.D. courses is based on performance in the entrance examination and qualifying degree. The equal amount of weightage is being given to each criterion. The entrance test of 50 marks will be organized by the respective departments of the University. The entrance test will have two sections as given below:

    An aspirant must secure a minimum of 25 marks out of 50 marks in the entrance test. Aspirants who have been granted a fellowship by UGC-CSIR etc. or Project Fellows recruited in major Research Projects by funding agencies or Teachers working in affiliated colleges are exempted from appearing in the written test.
