Madras University invites students to join their Distance Learning Programs which are available throughout the year in the Academic Year session (June to May) as well as for Calendar Year session (January to December). Madras University’s UNOM-IDE has come into existence in the year 1981. Distance education initiative majorly helps those students who were unable to pursue the course in regular mode. The prime motive was to offer value education to those scholars who were unable to secure admission in regular courses provideed by the university.

The Institute of Distance Education at current provides 97 Degree Programs namely; Undergraduate 27, Postgraduate 21, Professional 18, Diploma 21, and Certificate 10. Professional and job oriented programs are now provideed in collaboration with the industries. University has 30 spot admission centers & 50 study centers under its IDE.

Madras University Distance Admission 2018 Eligibility Criteria

Bachelor of Library and Information Science [B.Lib]

Duration: 1 Year

Eligibility: Student passed with any Degree Examination are qualified to apply.

Master of Library and Information Science [M.Lib]

Duration: 1 Year

Eligibility:  Students with Bachelor of Library Science / Bachelor of Library and Information Science Degree are qualified to apply.

Under Graduate Certificate in Arts & Under Graduate Certificate in Computer Applications

Specialization:  Library and Information Science

Duration: 3 months

    Post Graduate Diploma in Management, Post Graduate Diploma in Medical & Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications

    • The Application form must be accompanied by All the Original Certificates and the Registration Fee of Rs.100/- for UG, Rs.150/- for PG, Rs.400 for M.B.A. (Executive), and Rs. 1000 for Professional courses.
    • Detach the Application Form, Computer Coding Sheet, and Address Slip from the prospectus.
    • After filling the form cautiously, students have to send the form along with the original certificates mentioned below:
    • The students can collect the prospectus and application form from the Institute / Study Centers / Spot Admission Centers / Participatory Institutions / Twinning Program Centers for Rs. 100, or by post by sending a demand draft of Rs. 150 to The Director, IDE., University of Madras, or via the official website for by paying INR 200 via online payment.
    1. Transfer Certificate from the Head of the Institution where the participant last studied
    2. Statement of Marks of the Qualifying examination
    3. Provisional Pass Certificate / Diploma Certificate
    4. Authenticated translation in English duly attested by a Gazetted Officer, if certificates are in a language other than ENGLISH / TAMIL
    5. Equivalence Certificate” alloted by the Association of Indian Universities, for students who studied abroad
    6. One photograph each on  Application Form, Address Slip, and reverse side of the Coding Sheet

    Submission of Application Form:

    After filling of application form, you required to send it to the study center/spot admission center or twining programme center along with application fee of INR 100 (through challan/Demand Draft). Demand draft should be in the favor of “The Director IDE, University of Madras, Chennai-600 005’

    Madras University Distance Admission Procedure 2018

    Post Graduate Diploma in Management, Post Graduate Diploma in Medical & Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications

    • After submission of an application for particular Diploma or Post Graduate Diploma course, students will be informed about the admission proceedings with respect to an order of their applications.
    • Selection will be performed on two factors namely, first cum first serve basis & merit list in certain cases.

    Scholarships Available:

    SC/ST students are qualified for reimbursement of fees and the annual allowance of Rs. 500 for books.

    Visually impaired or otherwise physically challenged aspirants can avail themselves of the State Government Scholarship for the Disabled.


    • Admission cannot be claimed as a matter of right and the Institute reserves the right of admission
    • All the courses of the Institute are provideed to the residents of India and also to foreign countries as per the discretion of the authorities
    • The admission of the defaulters will automatically stand canceled. They may, however, be readmitted to the same course on payment of  Rs. 500/- subject to approval by the authorities
    • Aspirants are not permitted to remit the fees in installments.
