Jadavpur University, West Bengal provides research-based programs such as M.Phil. and Ph.D. Programs. The application forms for all courses will be made available online the University website in the month of May and admissions to the programs are done by the month of July.

Jadavpur University provides 15 M.Phil. courses in various subjects via several departments and 11 Ph.D. Courses. The University even provides several postgraduate and professional courses. There is also a provision for continuation of Ph.D. after completing M.Phil. from this university.

The last date for submission of Application form for M.Phil. The program is May 17, 2017. The application forms for Ph.D. The program can be submitted from April 25, 2017, to May 13, 2017.

The admission to the above-mentioned courses is done via Admission Test organizeed by the different departments of the University, including the Interview for many programs.

  • For admission to the program, the aspirant should have passed the Master’s Degree in the relevant branch for which one wishes to pursue the M.Phil. Program
  • If you are a College Teacher with 5 years of teaching experience in a government recognized college, you should have secured minimum 40% marks in the MA Economics for M.Phil. Economics and 50% marks in the Master’s Degree in the relevant branch of other M.Phil. Programs.    
  • If you belong to SC/ST category, you should have secured minimum 40% marks in the Master’s Degree in the relevant branch for eligibility to the M.Phil. Program.
  • Aspirant who have appeared or due to appear in final examination of MA/MSc or its equivalent (in the relevant subjects) scheduled to be finished before June 15, 2017, securing minimum the at least percentage of marks mentioned above, with minimum 40% marks in each course/paper are also applicable to apply.

  • You could also have obtained the Bachelor’s degree in Engineering /Technology /Pharmacy /MCA of this university or from any other university or Institutions recognised as equivalent thereto by the university; or
  • For admission to the above-mentioned program, aspirant should have obtained the Master’s degree in any branch from any University or other Institution recognised by this University or such other degree as may be considered sufficient for this purpose by the University; or
  • M.Phil. students of Jadavpur University who have successfully defended their viva-voce examinations and have valid Continuing UGC Fellowship (NET-JRF/RGNF/Moulana Azad and the like) may also apply. They may be considered under Continuing Fellowship Holder category offered they have not registered themselves in any other university/Institute after completing their M.Phil. degrees at Jadavpur University.
  • You could also have obtained a Post-graduate Diploma/Degree of fewer than two years’ period from any University or Institution recognised by this University offered that you have finished minimum a total of five years of graduate and postgraduate study in a recognised university or Institution; or

M.Phil. Program:

The application procedure is clearly online and the duly filled Application Forms must be submitted by May 17, 2017. The form can be accessed on the University website. Arts Building, Ground Floor, Jadavpur University,

Please note down this, you will require this No. Otherwise, a waiver from WRET and/or course-work shall not be granted.

Application Fee: You should pay the Application fee of Rs. 500 via a Demand Draft drawn in favour of The Registrar, Jadavpur University, payable at Kolkata.

The duly signed Application form along with the need enclosures must be submitted to the following address:

You have to offer this information only once, regardless of how many departments you apply for.

Online Application: The entire Application procedure includes primarily of three steps.

Step 1: First, you must log in and enter your individual and educational information here. You should then upload the SB Collect Reference No (starting with DU) in this website, and click on submit.

Ph.D. Program:

Aspirants should apply in the prescribed form available on the website. The duly filled in Application form must be submitted by April 25, 2017.

Enclosures: The following documents should be attached with the application form: 

  1. Two recent passport size photographs.
  2.  Attested copies of all mark-sheets and certificates, Madhyamika hall ticket/certificate for verification of age, SC/ST/PD/OBC-A/OBC-B certificate, where eligible.
  3. NET/SET certificate, if any.
  4. An aspirant who has a two-year M.Phil. Degree from any university other than Jadavpur University will need to submit a certificate from the competent authority stating that the selection to the M.Phil. the course has been made via a written test and that a full paper on Research Methodology of minimum one semester period was taught in the M.Phil. Course. to login to this system in future.

    Step 2: You will now need to select the department you wish to apply for. If you are applicable, click the Apply button. Before applying you can review the eligibility criteria from the link on the top right corner. You must note down that Application number.

    Step 3: In the Main Page you will get the link for online payment of Application Fee of Rs. 500 which can be made online through SBI I-Collect system in any of the following modes:

    • Debit Card
    • Net Banking
    • Credit Card

    Now you required to go to the link and pay the Application Fees using Net Banking/ Credit Card/ Debit Card. Now click Submit button to save your data. You will then get a unique number.

The Admission Test for M.Phil. The program will be organizeed by the respective departments. Aspirants who have done M.Phil. Program or have qualified in the NET/SET/GATE/Teacher Fellow or any other examination shall be exempted from giving the Written Test and will have to straight appear in the Interview.

For the Interview to the Ph.D. Program, the aspirant will need to submit a Statement of Purpose relevant to his/her intended field of research, with not more than 500 words.

Fees Structure of Jadavpur University
It will be for a period of two hours, except for Economics which will be for two and a half hours. The aspirant should be able to secure an at least of 50% marks to qualify in the Admission Test.

The distribution of seats to the M.Phil. The program shall be as follows:

The reservation criteria will apply only to those aspirants domiciled in the state of West Bengal. It should be alloted by the competent authority that completely indicates:

  1. The category (A or B) they belong to;
  2. That they do not belong to creamy layer of the society
Participants under PD category will have to appear before an expert committee to be constituted by the University.

For OBC Category: The aspirants who will be provisionally selected under the OBC- A and OBC- B categories must produce an OBC certificate at the time of counseling/ admission, whose date of issue should not be previous than June 2015. It will be based on the policy followed by the state government rules.

For PWD: Persons with 40% or more disability will only be considered for admission under PD category under PWD.
