Jamia Millia Islamia was founded in 1920 by Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar, Shaikhul Hind Maulana Mahmud Hasan, Hakim Ajmal Khan, Shri A.M. Khwaja, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad Ansari, Dr. Zakir Husain, etc. Jamia Millia Islamia is the recipient of Visitor’s Award for ‘Research’ for path-breaking research carried out in the field of Astrophysics and Cosmology. at Aligarh (Uttar Pradesh). It is accredited 'A' by NAAC.

The University invites aspirants for their different research programs provided in M.Phil. and Ph.D. courses. The research programs require the aspirants to hold a Master’s Degree as the basic requirement.

The admission is based on entrance test organized by JMI for each course. The test is also followed by an interview.

The last date for the submission of application forms is 21st April for M.Phil. and 17th August for Ph.D. courses. Another 5% is booked for internal students. About 50% of the seats are reserved for Muslim categories. Application forms are available on the University's website. They are to be filled and submitted online only. The University may or may not fill all of them. The seats indicated for each course are the maximum seats.

JMI University Ph.D & M.Phil. Admissions 2018 Eligibility Criteria

M.Phil. (West European Studies) , M.Phil. (Hindi) & M.Phil. (History)

The aspirants want admission must have a Master’s Degree with minimum 55% marks aggregate or an equivalent grade in the related subject or allied subject.

M.Phil. (Education)

The aspirants want admission must have a Master’s Degree in Education or any allied field like Philosophy, Sociology, Psychology etc. with minimum 55% marks aggregate or an equivalent grade.

M.Phil. (Development Studies)

The aspirant wants admission must have a Master’s Degree in Economics/Political Science/ Sociology/ Public Administration/ Human Rights/History/Allied subject with minimum 55% marks aggregate or an equivalent grade.

The eligibility for all the specializations of the Ph.D. program is as follows:

Eligibility: The aspirants who seek admission to a doctoral program must have a Second class Master’s Degree or an equivalent Degree with minimum 55% aggregate marks in the subject in which the aspirant seekings to pursue his/her research or in an allied subject.


All aspirants who seek admission to any of the JMI's provided courses have to appear for an Entrance Test that is organized by JMI. The test will have two parts. The decided syllabus along with the hall tickets of the registered students are made available on the University's website.

The admission test for Ph.D. courses will be done for shortlisting aspirants for consideration by the Board of Studies/ Committee of Studies. The entrance test is followed by an interview. Qualifying in the entrance test would not give any right to admission to the aspirant. The second part will be two hours long and have 50 MCQs and 50 subjective questions.

The following aspirants will be exempted from the entrance test and can straight apply for the interview:

  • ICCR sponsored aspirants
  • The teacher fellowship holders of the recognized college/university/ institution only if a certificate of No Objection is submitted by their employer.
  • Aspirants who have qualified UGC/CSIR NET/JRF examination or any other equivalent examination or have successfully finished regular M.Phil. program from a recognized University.

The interviews will only be organized in JMI campus, Delhi.

The first part will be of one hour and will contain 50 MCQs.

JMI University Ph.D. & M.Phil. Admissions 2018 How To Apply?

M.Phil/Ph.D in Arts , M.Phil/Ph.D in Architecture & M.Phil/Ph.D in Science

  1. Aspirants can get the application form from http://jmi.ac.in/.
  2. The aspirants have to fill the form online.
  3. The aspirant has to upload a scanned copy of their colored passport sized photo (.jpeg pattern with size not between 5KB and 20KB) and their signature (Blue/Black ink on white paper with the size between 5KB and 10KB).
  4. After filling the form, the aspirants have to pay a registration fee either by Net Banking/Debit/Credit card or the fees can be paid in cash at any Indian Bank discipline by downloading the challan from the admission portal.
  5. The registration fee is as follows:
  • For M.Phil. courses (except Education): Rs. 500/-
  • For M.Phil. (Education): Rs. 700/-
  • For Ph.D. courses: Rs. 1,000/-
  1. The aspirants do not need to upload any certificate etc.
  2. The following details are compulsory to be willing with the aspirant before filling the form:
  • Credit/Debit Card (in case of online payment)
  • Scanned Photo
  • Scanned Signature
  • E-mail ID
  • Mobile Number

Note: When paying via debit/credit card, do not press back/refresh or close the window during the payment as it can cancel the payment.

JMI University Ph.D. & M.Phil. Admissions Procedure 2018

M.Phil/Ph.D in Arts , M.Phil/Ph.D in Architecture & M.Phil/Ph.D in Science

  1. The selection is based on the rank/marks scored by the aspirant in an Entrance Test organized by JMI.
  2. The entrance test may or may not be followed by an interview.
  3. The aspirants have to score minimum 40% marks to be applicable for selection in M.Phil. programs and minimum 50% marks to be applicable for Ph.D. programs.
  4. The allocation of seats will be according to JMI's Admission Process.
  5. A list of selected and waitlisted aspirants will be available on JMI's notice board as well as on their website.
  6. The selected aspirants will be given a date to appear for the admission formalities.
  7. The selected aspirants are to bring their hall tickets of the entrance test, along with originals and self-attested copies of the following documents:
  • Note: Self-employed aspirants have to show authentic evidence of self-employment.
  • Proof of address along with name and location of the nearest police station
  • Age proof (High School/Senior Secondary School's mark sheet)
  • In case of gap period, the certificate from class –1 gazetted officer to certify no indulgence in criminal behavior
  • A Broad Research Proposal duly signed by the aspirant on every page and having the signature of Supervisor/Co-supervisor on a first and last page (for Ph.D.)
  • 10+2 or equivalent exam's mark sheet
  • Certificate of No Objection by the present employer (for evening/part-time/Sponsored courses)
  • Certificate from M.B.B.S. doctor/Govt. Hospital certifying blood group
  • Character Certificate from the last attended institute
  • A Consent Letter from the Co-Supervisor(s) specifying his/her field of specialization with full correspondence address (for Ph.D.)
  • Proof of passing qualifying exam along with mark sheets.
  • Proof of entitlement to any reserved category (if eligible)
  1. Fees for the first year can be paid by cash, online, or demand draft.
