Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Thiruvananthapuram is a government-aided institute and deemed university for the study and research of space science. The institute provides admission to its doctorate programmes twice a year i.e. January and July. 

Aspirants who seek Ph.D. admission should register via the online application procedure from the official IIST website and pay the need procedures fee via the generated challan.Applications submitted online only will be considered for procedures under any circumstances.

Applicable aspirants will be shortlisted for interview on the basis of their GATE scores and be qualifying post-graduate (PG) degree merit. Final selection for admission will be done on the basis of aspirant’s performance in the interview/ entrance test.

IIST Ph.D. Admissions 2018 Eligibility Criteria

M.Phil/ Ph.D. in Engineering & M.Phil/ Ph.D. in Science

IIST provides Ph.D. programmes in the following research areas:

  • Humanities
  • Mathematics
  • Earth and Space Sciences
  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Aerospace
  • Avionics

Eligibility:

Aspirant should be an Indian citizen and below 28 years as on 30th of November of the related admission year

For Ph.D. in Aerospace, Avionics, Earth & Space Sciences:

Master’s Degree in Engineering/Technology

  • Aspirants with Integrated masters degree (or Dual Degree) in Engg/Tech from IITs and IISc with at least CGPA 9.0/10 can be considered without GATE Scores
  • Aspirants with outstanding academic record in MS in Engineering or equivalent from leading foreign Universities/MS by Research can be considered without GATE scores
  • The aspirant should have secured first class or equivalent in his/her Master’s Degree in Engineering / Technology. He/she must have pursued Master’s degree on the basis of qualified GATE score

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering/Technology

  • He/she should possess a valid GATE score of 675 or better. B.E. / B. Tech students from IITs with at least CGPA of 9.0/10 do not require GATE
  • Aspirant should have Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology with an at least CGPA of 9.0/10

For Ph.D. in Mathematics, Physics & Chemistry:

  • The aspirant must have obtained first class or equivalent in his/her Master’s Degree in the relevant area.
  • He/she must have qualified UGC/CSIR NET/JEST (or) GATE in the relevant branches.

For Ph.D. in Humanities:

  • He/she must have qualified UGC/CSIR NET -JRF in the relevant branches
  • Aspirant must have obtained first class or equivalent in his/her Master’s Degree in the relevant area

IIST Ph.D. Admissions 2018 How to Apply

M.Phil/ Ph.D. in Engineering & M.Phil/ Ph.D. in Science

Applications shall be submitted only via online registration procedure through the official IIST website.

  • All the aspirants have to bring the Bank challan copy of the respective Department code at the time of the interview as proof
  • Once the application is submitted, the aspirant must pay the related application fee of Rs. 250/- per Department code (For SC/ST/PWD and Women - Rs.125/- per Department code) via Bank challan. The application fee is non-refundable
  • Aspirants employed in Government/Semi Government/PSUs/Autonomous Bodies should produce a “No Objection Certificate (NOC)” from the present employer at the time of interview. SC/ST/OBC/Persons with Disabilities (PWD) aspirants shall upload the relevant certificate before the prescribed date
  • If the aspirant wishes to apply for more than one Department code, he/she must submit the application and fee for the respective Department codes separately

IIST Ph.D. Admissions 2018 Admission Procedure

M.Phil/ Ph.D. in Engineering & M.Phil/ Ph.D. in Science

Applicable aspirants will be shortlisted for interview on the basis of their GATE/NET scores. Therefore, aspirants are advised to submit the GATE score via which Master's Degree has been pursued. If the aspirant has appeared for GATE more than once, he/she should enter the best GATE score obtained

Once the list of shortlisted aspirants is published on the university website, they will be called in for the interview at IIST, Thiruvananthapuram. Depending on the number of participants who have applied, the final selection will be done on the basis of the interview. Selected aspirants will be intimated within a week after the interview.

Note: In case of a large number of applications for Ph.D. admission, a written test will be organized for shortlisting aspirants for the interview. The written test is aimed to evaluate the basic understanding of the relevant research area

IIST Ph.D. Admissions 2018 Important Notes

Research Fellowships: The scholars will need to assist the Departments in tutorials/practicals or concerned academic activities normally limited to 6 hours per week. Research Fellowships are as per Government of India norms.

Scholarships/Fellow Assistance:

  • After 2 years of research experience, aspirant’s performance will be evaluated by a review committee. Based on the review, the fellowship amount may be boosted to Rs.28000/- per month
  • Research scholars who possess Post Graduate Degree in Basic Science with NET or equivalent qualification OR Graduate Degree in Professional Course with NET or equivalent qualification OR PG Degree in Professional Course will receive a Fellowship of Rs.25000/- per month
