The University of Calcutta (informally known as Calcutta University or CU) is a public state university situated in Kolkata, West Bengal, founded on 24 January 1857. Within India, it is recognized as a "Five-Star University" and a "Centre with Potential for Excellence" by the UGC and the NAAC. It was the first institution in Asia to be founded as a multidisciplinary and secular Western-style university.

There are seven Nobel laureates affiliated with this university including Ronald Ross, Rabindranath Tagore, C. The university is recognized as one of the most prestigious universities in the world. It has the highest number of students who have cleared the doctoral entrance eligibility exam in Natural Science & Arts. V. Raman and Amartya Sen. It was also ranked 2nd by the India Today Top India Universities of 2012, 2013 and 2014.

The University invites applications for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Programme and Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) Programme in different specializations. The admission to both the programmes will be based on the Research Entrance Test organized by the University departments, followed by an Interview. The application forms are available online on the University website.

Eligibility Criteria:

You should have passed the Master’s Degree in the respective subjects, from the University of Calcutta or other Universities considered equivalent thereto.

You should have secured at least 55% marks in the Master’s degree examination.

Step To Apply

M.Phil/ Ph.D. in Science

For Ph.D. Programme:-

You can obtain the Application Form either from the University office or the University website.

If you are obtaining it online, you must download it and take a print out of the Application Form.

You should fill the Application Form with the need for personal and educational details. Discipline. For SBI collect system, it will require an additional commission for bank transaction.

Application Fee: You must the Application Fee of Rs. 100 (in cash only) via a challan available from the University Cash Counter at the College Street Campus, CU.

Enclosures: You must attach the following along with the attested copy of certificates:

  • Research Proposal (in about 1000 words)
  • Short essay (in about 600 words)

You must then send the duly signed Application Form along with the required enclosures to the following address:

For M.Phil. Programme:-

You can obtain the Application Form either from the University office or the University website.

If you are obtaining it online, you must download it and take a print out of the Application Form.

You should fill the Application Form with the required personal and educational details. You must also affix a recent passport size colored photograph in the space provided.

Application Fee: You must the Application Fee of Rs. 500 for general category and Rs. 250 for SC/ST/PWD category, through any of the following manner:

By Internet Banking/debit card/credit card of any bank

By “SBI Collect” system i.e., cash to State Bank of India, C.U. Branch. For SBI collect system, it will require an additional commission for bank transaction.

You should attach a copy of the deposition receipt if you are paying via SBI collect. You must then send the duly signed Application Form along with the required enclosures to the following address:

Admission Procedure

M.Phil/ Ph.D. in Science

For both Ph.D. and M.Phil. Programme:-

You will be selected on the basis of Research Entrance Test organized by the respective departments.

The examination will be for a maximum of 50 marks which will be Multiple Choice based questions. It will be on the syllabus of the respective master’s programme at the University of Calcutta.

The maximum marks for Interview will be 50 marks with Research Proposal and Short Essay for 30 marks and 20 marks respectively.

Concessions: If you have eligible UGC/CSIR (JRF) Examinations/ NET/GATE etc. The exam will be for a period of one hour. If you get selected in the Entrance Test, you will have to appear for the Interview. /M.Phil. / M.Tech or equivalent examinations, you will be exempted from giving the Entrance Examination. However, you will have to appear for the Interview.

Reservation Criteria

The reservation criteria will be as per the rules prescribed by the Government of West Bengal.

For SC, ST, OBC – A, OBC – B and PWD candidate will be made as per University /Govt. rules.

Reservation of 3% of seats for PWD within each respective category (SC/ST, OBC – A, OBC – B/unreserved of the concerned subject)

100 Point Roster of West Bengal Board of Higher Educational Institution will be followed in the final selection.

Fee Structure

Rs. 4000/- to be paid by the selected Aspirants at the time of admission (except Library Information Science).

For Library & Information Science (a) Rs. 625/- per month for non-sponsored Aspirants, (b) Rs. 875/- per month for sponsored Indian Aspirants, (c) US $ 1000/- or its equivalent for foreign or NRI Aspirants to be paid at the time of admission. [Admission fees: Rs. 500/- and Library fees Rs. 400/- extra].
