Birla Institute of Technology Mesra (BIT MESRA) is an Institute of higher education and a deemed University under Section 3 of the UGC Act. M. Birla. BIT was the first institute in India to found a Department of Space Engineering and Rocketry, in 1964. It was founded in the year 1955 at Mesra, Ranchi in the state of Jharkhand by the philanthropist and industrialist Late Shri. B.

The main campus at Mesra is a wholly residential campus. The Institute invites Applications for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Programme for the academic year 2016-17 under different specializations. The programme is available in both full time and part time mode.

The Application procedure will be partly online beginning from April 7th, 2018 which must be finished by April 30, 2018 and the finished Application form must be sent to the University by May 2nd, 2018. The admission to the programme will be based on the earlier academic record, and a Written Test and Interview to be held on May 23rd, 2018.

Eligibility: Aspirants should fulfill any of the following conditions to be applicable to apply for admission in the departments as per their Specialization:

  • Aspirants possessing M.Tech. / B.E./ B.Sc. (Engineering)/ B.Pharm / B.Arch. or equivalent Degree in relevant discipline from a recognised University/ Institute with at least 70% marks or 7.0 CGPA on a ten point scale in the qualifying examination and a valid GATE score with an at least of 80 percentile.
  • Aspirants possessing B.Tech. / M.E. / M.Sc. (Engineering) / M.Arch. / M.Pharm / M.Sc. / MCA / MBA or equivalent Degree in relevant discipline from a recognised University / Institute with at least 60% marks or 6.0 CGPA on a ten point scale in the qualifying examination
  • Aspirants possessing B.Tech. / B.E./ B.Sc. (Engineering)/ B.Pharm / B.Arch. or equivalent Degree in relevant discipline from a recognised University/ Institute with at least 70% marks or 7.0 CGPA on a ten point scale in the qualifying examination and employed in R&D organizations and having ten years’ experience with good research credentials.

Note: There shall be a relaxation of 5% marks in case of SC/ST aspirants. In case of the aspirants with other grade point scale, the judgment of the equivalence committee of the Institute shall be final.

How To Apply

M.Phil/ Ph.D. in Engineering, M.Phil/ Ph.D. in Management & M.Phil/Ph.D in Science

The Application Forms are to be filled online at the University website and submitted within the stipulated time. You can apply to a maximum of three departments only.

Step 1: You must visit the University website and click on “Click Here to Apply Online”. You must use the given username and password to login.

Step 3: You must fill in the educational details and professional work experience details.

Step 4: You should then upload your recent color passport size photograph which should not exceed 5kb in size.

Step 5: You can now either save your Application for future changes or if you have finished the Application, click on “Generate Application Number”.

Step 6: After generation of ‘Application Number’, you must click on the link State Bank Collect for payment towards application fee of Rs. 2500 or general and OBC category and Rs. 1500 for SC/ST category, either via net banking, or debit or credit card.

Step 7: You must then submit your Application Form and take a print out of the Application Form.

Step 8: You should attach the following enclosures with the Form (You must write your Name and “B.Pharm- 2016” on the back of each of the photocopies):

  • Certificate and mark-sheets of Post-Graduation
  • Caste certificate / special category certificate (if eligible) which should be in proper pattern and signed by suitable authority of rank not less than SDO
  • Class 10th certificate
  • Certificate and mark-sheets of Graduation
  • Class 10th and Class 12th mark sheet
  • Photo identification
  • College Leaving Certificate
  • CSIR-NET / BRNS/ NBHM / other test hall ticket and Scorecard (if eligible)
  • Migration Certificate
  • NOC, Experience Certificate and Facilities available to carry out the research work at their place of working (if eligible) for aspirants employed in R&D organizations
  • One recent color photograph

Step 9: You should then send the printed copy of the Application Form along with the need enclosures and a copy of the Payment Receipt in an A4 size envelope with “Application for Ph.D. Admission (MO) 2016” written on top of the envelope, to the following address:

Step 2: You should register for the Application Form by filling in the need individual details and the programme you’re applying for. You must use one application form to apply for Ph.D. Programme in only one Department, and use separate application forms to apply for two or more Departments.

Admission Procedure

M.Phil/Ph.D in Architecture, M.Phil/ Ph.D. in Engineering & M.Phil/ Ph.D. in Science

The selection to the Ph.D. Programme will be based on performance in a Written Test, Earlier academic record, and an Interview.

The Ph.D. Entrance Test would consist of 2 parts:

  1. General Aptitude Test common to all participants shall include 50 questions from Analytical Ability and Logical Reasoning, and English, both having 25 each, to be responses in 60 minutes. There shall be negative marking with 0.5 marks being deducted for every wrong response.
  2. Subject Specific Tests to examine basic fundamental knowledge in the subject also for one and a half hour

The syllabi of the General Aptitude Test and the Subject Specific Tests for each Department can be seen on the Department web pages on the Institute website.

Only such aspirants, who obtain the at least need marks in Aptitude Test, Subject Specific Test and the indicated total percentage of marks, will be considered for final preparation of result as given below:

Concessions: You will be exempted from writing the Entrance Test if you have qualified UGC-JRF, CSIR-NET, or any other national level test for studying Ph.D.

The questions will be both subjective and objective carrying a total of 100 marks.

Reservation Criteria

The reservation criteria will be as per the norms prescribed by the state government of Jharkhand.


Aspirants with qualifications earned via correspondence or distance-learning programmes shall be applicable only if they fulfill any of the following conditions:

  • If the programmes are recognised by the DEC-UGC-AICTE or MHRD
  • If they have passed the qualifying examination at the time of applying, with at least requisite marks as given in eligibility criteria.
  • If they earned such qualifications as working professionals/while in employment

They must enclose photocopies of work experience certificate and pass certificate and mark-sheets of qualifying examination with their application.
