About University

Gujarat Vidyapith (GVP) was established in the year 1920 by Mahatma Gandhi. It changed into a deemed university in 1963. Gujarat Vidyapith is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) for higher education programs. It was started as Rashtriya Vidyapith (National Institute of University Education) and was the starting of the Non-cooperative Movement. 

  • After Gandhi Ji, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Dr. Rajendra Prasad and Morarji Desai were made chancellor of the University
  • The Vidyapith stopped functioning temporarily during the civil disobedience movements of 1930 and 1932 and the Quit India movement of 1942
  • The Vidyapith started functioning again from 1945 and in 1947, the Mahadev Desai College of Social Work was established
