XAT 2018 Preparation Tips for General Awareness

XAT General Knowledge Section is another important section apart from Judgment Making which makes it various from other management entrance tests. Do not ignore this section. Though this section is not comprised in determining the percentile and the cutoff in the first stage of the selection procedure, still it has importance. XLRI considers GK section for the final round of selection and some other top b schools also consider this while final selection. So a low score in this section may eliminate you from your dream B school. The score in this section is very helpful while final selection procedure.

Firstly GK section was asked along with Essay writing when it was reintroduced in 2013.

Time Allotment- GK Section was when asked in XAT 2013; it was combined with essay writing section with time allocation of 40 minutes for both the parts. In 2014 XAT organizing authorities combined GK with aptitude section and time allotted was 150 minutes for this whole section. No. Since then the same format is being followed. of questions asked now is 20, which means you can devote 20 minutes for this section.

Following is the analysis of good attempts in this

05 – 10 accurate – Average score

10 – 15 accurate – Good Score

15 plus accurate – Excellent

Type of Questions asked

Being very vast subject Syllabus for General knowledge cannot be defined. However, there are some topics from which mostly questions are asked. These topics comprise-

  • Science and Technology
  • National Present Affairs
  • History, Geography, and Polity etc.
  • Economy

Some basic tips to follow for preparing GK Section

Most of the aspirants prepare intensively for QA and English but give less time to GK. Always remember, one mark in GK is equal to one mark in Quantitative Ability and one mark in English. Average time taken to solve each GK question is very less. Also, less effort is required to score better in GK and as cutoffs are generally low in GK, it helps in improving overall marks. It takes approximately 30 seconds for each GK question.


Following are some useful tips to do better in this section

As GK is so vast, it is not possible to learn everything so pick areas according to the exam. You should concentrate on the following areas: You required to focus on these most important areas.

  • Major books announced this year, business concerned books and business biographies and their authors.
  • Information on brands and companies
  • Present Business Affairs – Major economic judgments, mergers & takeovers, etc.
  • Present heads of major Global / Indian companies
  • Taglines of major Global / Indian companies

Questions in general awareness will be from business, economics, and politics concerned to present business environment. You should read newspapers to be aware of present affairs in these areas.

Economic Times, Business Standard, Mint, Business Week, Hindu, Business Line, etc.
