IES (Indian Engineering Services) UPSC Syllabus 2018

Union Public Services Commission is all set to organize IES Prelims 2018 on January 7. The syllabus for Engineering Services examination has been similar over the years. Aspirants must rigorously exercise IES Exercise Papers to get an idea of marking scheme and the format of IES Exam.

Students who complete IES Cutoff will appear in IES Main 2018 on July 1. Check all  IES 2018 Cut Off for Prelims, Mains & Finals Last year,  IES Final Cut Off for General category in EE was 769 marks while for ME stream it was 723 marks.

Exam Format of Indian Engineering Services 2018

Before delving into preparation, it is essential to develop a proper strategy and understand the exam format well to maximize scores in IES 2018:

Listed below are key facts about IES Exam Format:

  • Questions in Prelims exam are objective in nature.
  • The medium of examination is English.
  • The medium of examination is offline i.e. it is a written examination.
  • In IES, there will be a deduction of one-third of the mark allotted for each question for every wrong response attempted.
  • Questions in Mains will have questions of conventional type.
  • IES Exam is organizeed in 3 Stages namely Preliminary Exam, Mains Exam and Individuality Test.

IES (Indian Engineering Services) Syllabus 2018

  • Stage 1 consists of 2 Papers namely General Studies & Engineering Aptitude (Paper 1) and Engineering Branch (Civil/ Mechanical/ Electrical/ Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering).
  • The first two stages are written examinations.
  • Indian Engineering Services examination is organizeed in three stages.
  1. The questions in Paper 1 are based on Present issues, Basic Engineering Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics and Numerical Analysis etc.
  2. The questions in Paper 2 are based on the chosen engineering branch. 
  • Stage 2 also consists of 2 Papers, both the papers are engineering branch specific.

IES 2018 Syllabus for General Knowledge & Engineering Aptitude

  • Engineering Aptitude section will cover questions from
  • Questions in General Aptitude will cover questions from Present issues of national and international importance concerned to economic, social and industrial development.

  3. Numerical Analysis
  4. General Principles of Drawing, Design, and Importance of Safety
  5. Basics of Project Management
  6. Basics of Material Science and Engineering
  7. Basics of Energy and Environment: Conservation, environmental pollution, and degradation, Climate Change, Environmental impact assessment
  8. Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) based tools and their applications in Engineering such as networking, e-governance, and technology-based education.
  • Marks for each topic mentioned above will range from 5% to 15% of the total marks in the paper.
  • The questions in this paper are of graduate level.

IES Syllabus for Mechanical Engineering (ME)

  • The level of questions will vary as per the stages.
  • It is the widest and oldest discipline in IES.
  • The discipline applies the principles of engineering, physics and material science for the design, analysis, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems.
  • Both the Stages in IES will have questions from this branch. 
  • The paper code for Mechanical Engineering is ME.
