CLAT (Common Law Admission Test) 2018: How to Prepare for Legal Aptitude Section?

CLAT includes 5 sections i.e. English Comprehension, General Knowledge, Elementary Mathematics, Legal Aptitude and Legal Reasoning with Legal Aptitude section as the most significant part of CLAT. Its importance can be inferred from the fact that the section carries the maximum weight and also it's the judgement-making section i.e. in the case of a tie, examinees will be selected on the basis of their marks in this section. 
Legal Aptitude is based on the aspirant's ability to logically decipher the response from the question.

  • The section includes 50 questions.
  •  Legal Aptitude section is divided into 3 sections:
  • 1 mark will be allotted to the aspirants for every accurate response. 
  1. Legal Reasoning
  2. Legal Facts
  3. Legal G.K.
  • Legal GK questions will be based on the court concepts, government functions and hierarchy of Indian judiciary.
  • Legal Reasoning questions will be asked from Constitution of India, Law of tort & contract and Indian Penal Code.
  • In order to score well in this section, an aspirant must not spend more than 25- 30 minutes along with the accuracy of minimum 85%.
  • Legal Fact questions will revolve around Preamble, rights and legal principles.

CLAT Legal Aptitude includes 50 questions out of 200 questions asked in CLAT. The questions will be asked in MCQ form and examinees have to mark one out of the offered options. Aspirant will be honoured 1 mark for every accurate response. A weightage of 25% is allotted to this section. Negative marking of 0.25 marks will be done in the case of wrong responses. Legal Aptitude section assesses the aspirant's inclination towards Law and their problem-solving ability in a given time duration. Examinees are given certain situations which they have to judge and come up with a suitable response to the given problem. The section comprises questions on legal principles.

Legal fact

In this section, direct questions based on Law are asked to test aspirants’ knowledge of legal facts. To effectively attempt the questions, one must have a good knowledge of amendments and judgments.Important topics from this subsection are:

  • Torts, amendments, recommendations, landmark judgments and law commission recruitments.


  • Constitution of India
  • Ministry of Law and Justice
  • High Court of Delhi
  • Government of India
  • Indian Penal Code

    Legal GK

    Questions under this part are based on both presents as well as static legal GK.Following are the important topics:

  • Law of tort
  • Supreme Court of India,
  • Directive Principles

    Legal Reasoning

    In this section, students are given a factual situation and they have to apply legal principles to it. Questions are generally asked from the following topics: Rather than legal knowledge, aspirant’s legal aptitude and logical skills are tested.

  • Preamble
  • Law of contract
  • Bar Council of India
  • Fundamental rights and duties
  • Knowledge about the hierarchy of Indian Judiciary

The questions in the CLAT Legal Aptitude Paper will be based on the topics prescribed in the syllabus of the CLAT UG. They will be objective in nature. Check CLAT Sample Paper. By practising the sample paper one will get a complete idea about the difficulty level of CLAT exam and also will help to know about the time management skills.

It is the most important section and to succeed in the examination one cannot afford to score fewer marks in CLAT Legal Aptitude section. Here are some important tips to ace in it.

  • Read a newspaper daily and try to learn new topics/ facts from it. 
  • One can response Legal facts section very easily with the proper knowledge of Fundamental right, Amendment, Decision and Recommendations & Chairpersons of law commissions
  • Focus more on Legal GK section and reading the newspaper/ watching news channels is the best source. Also, it will not only help responses Legal Aptitude GK questions but also will aid in CLAT GK section. 
  • Do not choose an option based on moral considerations
  • Solve as many sample papers/mock tests/ earlier year question papers.
  • Do not assume anything on your own and apply the facts.
  • Strict application of the principle i.e. think logically and avoid thinking emotionally.
  • Choose the option which comes closest to the given legal principle and elimination mode can be used.
