BARC (Bhabha Atomic Research Centre) Recruitment Through GATE 2018

BARC Appointment via GATE –  Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) is the nation’s premier nuclear research facility based in Mumbai, Maharashtra, operating a number of research reactors across the country. BARC appoints graduate engineers every year for the post of Trainee Scientist Officer via GATE score.

  • Aspirants need to apply on the official appointment portal of BARC.
  • The selection is done on the basis of GATE score followed by Individual Interview. 
  • The application fee is INR 500, it can be paid in online method through Debit card, Credit card or Net banking
  • Application form for BARC appointment via GATE will be available from January 23, 2018.

There are 2 types of appointment opportunities available for GATE 2018 Participants in BARC - OCES (One-year Orientation Course for Engineering Graduates and Science Postgraduates) and DGFS ( Two Year DAE Graduate Fellowship Scheme for Engineering Graduates and Physics Postgraduates).

Number of Vacancies for BARC Appointment 2018

BARC has announced the official notification for an appointment for the post of Trainee Scientific Officers via its academics programs.

  • DAE Graduate Fellowship Scheme (DGFS) for Engineering Graduates and Physics Postgraduates.
  • Orientation Course for Engineering Graduates and Science Postgraduates (OCES). 
  • On successful completion of the respective programs, the Trainee Scientific Officers (TSO) and DGFS Fellows will be appointed as Scientific Officers (Group A post of Government of India) and recruited at different DAE units or Atomic Energy Regulatory Board. 
  • The exact number of vacancies for the post will be released later.

Job Profile of BARC Appointment 2018

A Trainee Scientific Officer (TSO) who upon the completion of his/her training program secures an at least of fifty percent aggregate marks is declared to have finished the training successfully and is subsequently posted in any one of the DAE units as Scientific Officers.

  • OCES is a one-year training program for engineering graduates and science postgraduates.
  • The period of the program is two years. 
  • The training program is organizeed at the five BARC Training Schools located in Mumbai, Kalpakkam, Indore and Hyderabad.
  • The job profile of a Scientific Officer mainly involves research and development pertaining to nuclear science and technology.

TSOs are offered with necessary facilities and opportunities to acquire knowledge and thereby also enhance it and develop skills mainly with respect to research and development with regard to nuclear science and technology.

Salary of BARC Appointment 2018

OCES TSOs are paid a stipend of INR 35,000 during the duration of their Training whereas DGFS Fellows are paid a stipend of INR 20,000 per month during their M.Tech. Both OCES TSOs and DGFS Fellows are paid a one-time book allowance of INR 10,000. DGFS Fellows have reimbursed the tuition fee paid to their Institutes for studying the M. program. Tech./M.Chem.Engg.

  • An important point of note is that a revision of DGFS stipend to INR 35,000 p.m. is under consideration.
  • In addition, other Allowances such as Leave Travel Exemption by air, every year up to first eight years (subject to conditions) and once in two years thereafter, Children’s Education Allowance and an annual Professional Update Allowance are also payable. An extensive Contributory Health Service Scheme for employees and dependent family members is also available.
  • The recruitment is made at the beginning of the pay scale with OCES TSOs getting two or three increments depending on their performance during the OCES program. 
  • Total Monthly Emoluments (with three increments) at the time of joining including Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, Transport Allowance at the current rate will be approximately 61,000 (upward pay revision is under consideration of the 7th Central Pay Commission).
  • DGFS Fellows whose performance is below a specified threshold will receive zero increments.
  • DGFS Fellows getting three or four increments depending on their performance in M.Tech./M.Chem.Engg. and four-month Orientation Course for DGFS Fellows (OCDF).
  • Recruitment in all the units will be as a Scientific Officer (C) in the PAY BAND-III (15,600 INR-39,100 INR) with a Grade Pay of 5,400 INR.

The Application Procedure for Appointment of Trainee Scientific Officer by BARC though GATE starts on January 23, 2018. The aspirant has to visit the official website of BARC for applying for the post.

Eligibility for BARC Appointment 2018

Aspirants wishing to apply for BARC appointment have to fulfil the clear eligibility criteria prescribed by the authority. The academic eligibility in terms of the academic qualification is described below

  1. Only Indian nationals are applicable to apply. 
  2. Aspirants should have obtained an at least of 60% marks in their qualifying degree.
  3. A valid GATE 2018 score as need by the organization in the same engineering branch as the qualifying degree branch.
  4. Aspirants whose final results are awaited are also applicable to apply. However, if such an aspirant is selected, he/she must submit their mark-sheet of final result by 30th November 2018.

Age Limit

  • Physically challenged aspirants, irrespective of their categories are applicable for an age relaxation of up to ten years
  • SC/ST category-31 years
  • General category-26 years
  • OBC category-29 years
  • Dependent of those who died in the riots of 1984-31 years
  • Persons domiciled in the Kashmir division of the state of Jammu & Kashmir from 1st January 1981 to 31st December 1990 – 31 years.

Application Procedure of BARC Appointment 2018

The registration is done in online mode. All the applications should be submitted till deadline. Aspirants who wish to apply can submit the application form on the official website of BARC.

  • Participants have to pay an application fee of INR 500. It can be paid in online method through net banking/ debit card/ credit card and bank challan via State Bank of India.
  • In case of non-receipt of the mail, the aspirant can contact the helpdesk for the same.
  • While filling the form aspirants are also need to upload their recent passport size photograph and a scanned copy of their signature.
  • Once the aspirant has received the mail, the aspirant needs to clear the remaining form and submit the same.
  • Aspirants who fail to submit the clear from within the given frame of time will be disqualified.
  • Aspirants applying on the basis of their GATE score must enter the same. 
  • After creating his/her account for registration, aspirants must log in via the same fill in the form involving individual details, academic qualifications.
  • After the payment has bee made, the aspirant must wait for three for the payment to be verified. Once the payment is verified, aspirants shall receive an e-mail from BARC itself.

Instructions regarding uploading the documents. 

For scanned photograph

  1. The photograph must be a recent colour passport size photograph (4.5x3.5cm) and the size of the image should not be more than 50kb. It should be in JPost Graduate pattern only. 
  2. In case the size of the image is more than 50kb, the setting of the scanner such as resolution, number of colours can be adjusted during the procedure of scanning.
  3. Also, caps, hats and dark glasses are not allowed and religious headwear though permitted should not cover the face.

For scanned signature

The aspirant has to sign on a white paper with a black ink pen (2x4.5cm) and the size of the signature, not more than 20kb. It should be in JPost Graduate pattern only.

  • Discharge certificate in case of Ex-Servicemen aspirants
  • Any other documents/details regarding the eligibility criteria.
  • Scanned signature
  • One set of self-attested photocopies of all the documents listed
  • Disability Certificate, indicating the type of disability (in case of PWD)

  • GATE scorecard
  • Qualifying degree certificate and mark sheet
  • Scanned photograph

Application Fee for BARC Appointment 2018

Aspirants need to remit the prescribed fee online via Debit card, Credit card or Net banking. Aspirants belonging to reserved categories and Physically Challenged Aspirants do not need to pay any Application fee.

Selection Procedure for BARC Appointment 2018

The selection is done on the basis of GATE score and individual interview. Shortlisted aspirants on the basis of GATE score will be called for interview round. Qualified aspirants will be appointed for the post.

  • The interview will be organizeed in either Mumbai or Hyderabad during May-June 2018.
  • Selected aspirants need to report at BARC centres for completing joining formalities.
  • The final list of aspirants selected for OCES and DGFS will be displayed on the official site of GATE 2018.


The selection is also done on the basis of online entrance test followed by individual interview. The entrance test will be organizeed by the official authority.
