Kerala University Ph.D. & M.Phil Admission 2018

University of Kerala is one of the first 16 universities to come into existence in India. The University has also a number of study centers in specialized areas such as Nano-technology, Kerala Studies, Bioinformatics, Women’s Studies, Learning Difficulties, Sree Narayana Studies, Gandhian Studies etc. The University presently has 16 faculties and 41 departments of teaching and research.

The University of Kerala provides M.Phil.  And Ph.D. in a wide range of branches. The basic eligibility criteria for admission to M.Phil. and Ph.D. program is a Postgraduate degree in a relevant branch. 

The University takes admission to M.Phil. program once a year while admission procedure for Ph.D. program is organized twice a year. The admissions are made via an entrance test organized by the university. You can apply online via Kerala University’s official website before the last date. The University is soon to begin the Ph.D. admission procedure for the January 2018 session.  Admission to Ph.D. programs is also made with a few exceptions and concessions.

Eligibility Criteria for M.Phil Programmes

An aspirant must have obtained a master’s degree in the concerned branch with minimum 55% marks from any recognised university.

Eligibility Criteria for Ph.D. Programs

• One must have obtained a master’s degree in the concerned branch with minimum 55% Marks.
• Aspirants who have appeared for Master’s Degree Examination and whose result is still awaited may also apply.
• Aspirants who have already qualified in the National Eligibility Test for Junior Research Fellowship (NET-JRF) or lectureship of the UGC/CSIR or ICAR/GATE or ICMR JRF or the scholars who have been selected for fellowship by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment or the state level eligibility test organized by Kerala Government.
• Aspirants with following qualifications are exempted from the entrance test for Ph.D. admissions: DBT-JRF, DST-INSPIRE, GPAT, Aspirants/scholars with 7 years of experience and minimum 2 research papers, aspirants with DM/M.Ch. Degree, aspirants working with Central/state government in the concerned areas of research.

Application Process for M.Phil

The application form for M.Phil. courses can be accessed online via the Admission portal on Kerala University Official Website. The details for the same are given below:

Application Process for Ph.D. Programme:

Application forms will be available on the official website of Kerala University, After online application, an aspirant can download the filled in application form. Here are the steps to apply online:

1. Go to Kerala University’s Research Website.
2. On the right side, click on ‘Online Registration”.
3. The aspirant should offer details under Individual, Educational, Research & Fellowship details.
4. Once the details are finished, submit the application by clicking the 'Register' button at the end.
5. You will get a message of successful submission and also the username and password for future login.

Aspirants after applying online will require to download the application and send it along with the necessary documents. All relevant documents proving qualification and eligibility should be sent along with the application. The application fee details are given below:

Application Fee:

The application fee can be submitted to Account number 67153233669 in any discipline of State Bank of Travancore, via a challan generated during the Registration procedure. Incomplete application will be summarily rejected. Aspirants, who do not have a State Bank of Travancore discipline nearby, can submit the application fee via RTGS transfer.

Note: The photographs in the application and admit card should be attested by a Gazetted Officer and the name and designation of the Officer should be completely shown.

Application Fee and Payment Method:

• The cost of application form is Rs. 20/- and the fee for the test is Rs. 500/·. 
• All remittances should be either via University Cash Counter or Demand Draft allowed by the State Bank of Travancore, State Bank of India or the District Co-Operative Bank drawn in favor of the Finance Officer, University of Kerala, payable at Thiruvananthapuram, for students residing in the state of Kerala. Recent community certificate (within 6 months) should be furnished.
• The downloaded application furnished for the examination should be accompanied by self-addressed stamped and easily detachable envelope for sending the pass memo. In case of grades, honored certificate showing percentage equivalency should be furnished.
• Aspirants who have qualified from Universities outside Kerala University should produce a copy of Eligibility Certificate
• Copy of relevant certificate in the case of SC/ST aspirants attested by a Gazetted Officer should be sent along with the downloaded application. In the absence of an envelope, a fine 50/- will be charged.
• Aspirants who have appeared for Master's Degree Examination and whose results are still awaited should send a copy of the Admit Card attested by Gazetted Officer along with the application. After registration, an aspirant will be required to submit the application fee. Students residing in any other state can remit fee via an SBI draft, payable at SBI Main discipline, Thiruvananthapuram.

Documents to be submitted with the application form:

• Copies of Master's Degree Certificate and Mark List attested by a Gazetted Officer should be sent along with the downloaded application. An extensive mark list showing the exact percentage of marks secured or an equivalent certificate should be furnished. After submitting the fee, the aspirant must fill the payment details in their respective application forms. An aspirant will be required to offer certain essential details during form filling such as: Name as on official documents, valid email id, contact details, details of qualifying degree examination etc. (Last semester/ Year only will be considered.)

Selection Process for M.Phil Programmes

Selection of aspirants to the M.Phil. Programs will be made on the basis of their performance in the entrance examination organized by the university. Merit list will be prepared to keep in mind the marks scored by the aspirants in the entrance test and the marks obtained in the qualifying examination by the aspirants. Both the marks are to be taken in a ratio of 50:50.

The entrance test will be based on the course study finished by aspirants at Master’s degree level.

Selection Process for Ph.D. Programmes

Selection of aspirants for admission to the Ph.D. program at Kerala University will be made on the basis of aspirants’ performance in the entrance test organized by the university.

Entrance test:

• Postgraduate level knowledge of the subject and aptitude for research are expected of the aspirant.
• The test includes General Knowledge (40}, Short Responses (120} and an Essay (40 marks}.
• The general aptitude test will be of three hours duration and will carry a maximum of 200 marks.
