Kerala University of Health Sciences is a medical university situated in the city of Thrissur, Kerala and shares the campus of Government Medical College, Thrissur. It was set up in an attempt to ensure proper and systematic instruction, teaching, training and research in Modern Medicine, Homoeopathy and Indian Systems of Medicine including Ayurveda, Siddha, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani and other allied sciences and also to have uniformity in the different academic programs in medical and allied subjects in the State of Kerala. It was founded by the 'Kerala University of Health Sciences Act 2010'. The University has a total 249 professional colleges affiliated to it.

The university provides different courses in disparate fields of Health and Medical Sciences, from nursing to Ph.D. It also supports interdisciplinary studies in order to produce experts in different fields of medical sciences.

The university provides 2 M.Phil. Programs and subjects for Ph.D. programs can be chosen from any department at KUHS. The admission to the programs is based on aspirant’s performance in the entrance test and interview organized by the university.

Eligibility Criteria for M.Phil. And Ph.D. Courses

M.Phil/ Ph.D. in Science

The eligibility criteria for M.Phil. and Ph.D. Programs provided at KUHS has been explained below:

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.):

Psychiatric Social Work:

Eligibility Criteria:

  • There’s No age limit
  • Admission is reserved for aspirants who are Indian in origin
  • One must have obtained master’s degree in Social Work (Full time) from a recognised University securing not less than 55% marks in aggregate

Clinical Epidemiology:

Eligibility Criteria:

  • The aspirants should not be aged more than forty-five years on the forthcoming date of December 31st
  • One must have passed MS/MD in modern medicine or equivalent postgraduate degrees in nursing, pharmacy and dental sciences in modern medicine

M.Phil/ Ph.D. in Pharmacy

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.):

Courses Provided: KUHS promotes inter-disciplinary research at every level. The program shall hold a Master’s Degree/ Post-Graduate Degree or equivalent with minimum 60 percent marks or CGPA 6 out of a 10 point scale or equivalent grade in the qualifying examination in the related or concerned subject

  • Aspirants of Indian origin or foreign students of other nationality who hold a Master’s/ Post-Graduate Degree from an accredited foreign University securing an at least of 60% marks or equivalent grade are also applicable
  • Aspirants applying for part-time research program should have earlier work experience of minimum 5 Years
  • So, students can choose their branches from any department of KUHS.

    How to apply for M.Phil. And Ph.D. Courses?

    M.Phil (Psychiatric Social Work), Ph.D. (Dental Material) & Ph.D. (Pharmacy)

    The application process for M.Phil./Ph.D. courses provided by KUHS has been explained below:

    • All aspirants applying for admission to the .Ph.D. program shall submit a complete written proposal of the research to be organized, giving sufficient background material and the proposed line of research
    • However, the University reserves its right not to invite applications
    • Registration for M.Phil./Ph.D. may be granted in January and July sessions every year for which applications may be received in answer to the notification, by 31st July and 31st January respectively
    • Applications for admission shall be submitted to the Head of the related University Department/Centre/School/Head of the Recognised Institution in the prescribed application form and on payment of the prescribed fees

    Admission Procedure for M.Phil. And Ph.D. Courses

    M.Phil/ Ph.D. in Pharmacy, M.Phil/ Ph.D. in Science & M.Phil/Ph.D in Dental

    Selection of aspirants to the M.Phil./Ph.D. program will be based on the earlier academic record of the aspirant, and also on one’s performance in the entrance test organized by the university. The program shall need to current themselves for an interview with the Admission Committee, at which the academic record of the aspirant, the research proposal made by him/her in the application, long-term plan of academic work to be undertaken by the aspirant and other concerned matters may be discussed.

    The committee shall satisfy itself that the aspirant possesses the competence to carry out the proposed research and that the research work can be undertaken and uninterruptedly pursued in the University/Research Centre.


    Following students will be exempted from appearing for the entrance test:

    • Those who have been selected for the award of fellowship for research by UGC/CSIR/ICMR/DBT/KSCSTE or other similar fellowships
    • Aspirants who have already passed the UGC/CISR tests organized within two years prior to the notification for the current admission made by the University
    • Those who have been selected by the UGC under the FacultyImprovement Program (FIP) those who have been sponsored under a foreign scholarship scheme or those who have M. Phil with CGPA above 6.0 in a 10 point scale or equivalent grade/marks are exempted
    The first part will be general including topics of Research Methodology, Biostatistics, and ethics, eligible to all participants; the second part will be subject-specific.
  • The Examination will be consisting of Multiple Choice Questions carrying 200 Scores of 3 hours duration
  • The qualifying marks shall be 50% in each paper. The tests will be organized in October/April every year
  • The result will remain valid for 2 years
  • Interview:

    All aspirants want admission to the Ph. D. Final selection to the program will be based on an interview organized by the university at a later stage.

    Entrance Test Format and other details:

    • The admission test will have two parts with descriptive type questions.
